Art in rpgs: Chainmail bikinis, bikini witches, "cheesecake" etc

I guess a good thing about these sorts of threads is that we get to post some really good art.

I think this particular piece is excellent at depicting a female warrior

D&D is not an "everyone gets a ribbon" game.  If you\'re stupid, your PC will die.  If you\'re an asshole, your PC will die (probably from the other PCs).  If you\'re unlucky, your PC may die.  Point?  PC\'s die.  Get over it and roll up a new one.

I suppose people either love or hate Wen Yu Li. I'm in the first group :p

edit: that is a really sweet picture. I mean, even beyond the fact that I'm a sucker for winged helmets.

DISCLAIMER: she is a master of the motherfucking whip sword. She will cut you to ribbons from 30 feet away and then tell you where to shove your physics and deflections and structural integrity.

It must take a while to put on those boots in the morning, though.

I do like a whip sword (They're stupid in a good way), and that coat is amazing; her outfit looks great and instantly shows you her fighting style. Bit dungeonpunky, but far from obnoxiously so.

But her thighs! There's no protection there!

And you'd be very, very right.

Yeah I guess she's just not very well armo...

*checks the miniature game stats*

Okay, she has armor value which is comparable to, if not full plate then maybe lots of plate 0_o Must be an Empire thing.

Incidentally, I REALLY love games that differentiate between "armor" and "parrying/dodging" and love agile characters very biased towards the latter.

Anyway, here's some more stuff from the Iron Kingdoms files.

TRIGGER WARNING: OBNOXIOUSLY LARGE MACES AND SHOULDERPADS <3

Danger: high voltage! Also, putting a horse icon on your horse seems a bit hipstery.

Don't fuck with the northern ice elves, especially ones that dedicated their lives to revenge.

Gunslinger! The ass shot is a bit disappointing, but you have to love that scarf.

She's beautiful, she appears competent, and she's not standing like she's about to take in a sausage.

More like that, game designers and artists, please.

With the exception of those pauldrons, yes indeed.

I think my biggest gripe with female warriors in a lot of art is too often they have no muscle or athletic build. I would expect them to look more like athletes  I suppose.

Ratman_tf

I like implausibly sexy cheesecake. I like Red Sonja's chainmail bikini and the slutty Drow costumes.
Maybe that says something about me, maybe not, but I don't and won't agonize over it.
The notion of an exclusionary and hostile RPG community is a fever dream of zealots who view all social dynamics through a narrow keyhole of structural oppression.

I hear ya! Fighters are supposed to be the jocks of the group. Super popping muscles are not a requirement but a body that appears to be in fighting shape isn't too much to ask for.

Its funny seeing runway models that would blow away in a strong wind wearing armor that thier bodies wouldn't support.

We need more female fighters with bodies like Gina Carano & Rhonda Rousey.

Yeah, that is what i am thinking. Fighters dont need to look like body builders, but they should, at the very least, like people who fight for a living. I have a hard time when it looks like they couldn't even lift their sword because they've been living off saltines and water. And dont be affraid to give female warriors medium builds (Gina Corano is an excellent example-----EDIT on second thought she probably isnt medium build).

You can't really tell from the pic, but I'm sure you all have seen this movie and knows how tall she is compared to everyone else.  This is a woman who is believable as a warrior.

Y'know, part of me also think there's a "weapons and armor as fashion accessories pr0n!" factor.

I mean, there's quite a bit of, "OMG, shoes. Look at those shoes!" and "OMG, axe. Look at that axe!" going on with burly/svelte, sexy models. At some point it all seems a bit like the fashion industry, where the human/oid models are disposable clothes hangers to the truly important clothes and accessories. I mean it reads like so much gear accessory fetish, like a mix of Low Rider & Cosmo where it's really all about the cars and clothes -- except it's martial weapons and armor (and mounts).

At least Frazetta's human form felt honest and in command as the focus of desire. It was closer to Manet's Olympia than a cloying tease or mere mannequin. In fact, the returned gaze remind me quite a bit of Nagel's art, too. There's a reminder of the human strength underneath.

And further I'll still take a Vargas girl cheesecake over the accessory pr0n model; I'll take the tease over the mannequin. At least for me the human presence underneath is the focus, even if it's adorned artifice. That works better than accessories focus where the human is an unimportant commodity.

But I still like shoes and axes, too, so what can I say? I'll gladly take it all.

You know, people keep comparing non-TSR D&D to deck-building in Magic: the Gathering. But maybe it\'s more like Katamari Damacy. You keep sticking shit on your characters until they are big enough to be a star.

Yeah, one thing that's confusing for people is that the modern fitness model, athlete, and bodybuilder (at the extreme) is an aberration.

Heroically they're too lean.

For most human history big=strong in a way I think modern people interpret as fat.

Look at powerlifters, look at strongmen, hell look at a lot of blue collar workers.

The historical knight is more likely to look like "big joe" who hauls pipes down at the plant than Hans Flexinstuff on the cover of this months "Totally not porno musclemag"
