This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Art in rpgs: Chainmail bikinis, bikini witches, "cheesecake" etc

Quote from: jhkim;622188Eh.  I like boobies and I'm fine with using sex to sell a product if the product is related.  Fashion magazines sell ways to look sexy, so it fits.  However, I find throwing pictures of sexy women in as a way to sell computers or power tools or such just stupid and insulting.

If the RPG action is intended to include sex, relationships, and/or sexy activities, then I'm OK with selling with sexy pictures.  For example, some are supposed to have heroes with relationships going on beside the action - i.e. Marvel Superheroes, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, James Bond 007, etc.

Regardless, I still dislike it if the sexiness involves women disproportionately looking vulnerable and/or submissive compared to the men - which they frequently are.

yeah, if it fits the content, it's fine.  But 'sexy poses' just for the sake is unnecessary and outdated, especially if you're wanting to be more inclusive in a hobby that can't afford to push away anyone
D&D is not an "everyone gets a ribbon" game.  If you\'re stupid, your PC will die.  If you\'re an asshole, your PC will die (probably from the other PCs).  If you\'re unlucky, your PC may die.  Point?  PC\'s die.  Get over it and roll up a new one.

Quote from: Dana;621541There's the feminism that means something to me and most of the women of my acquaintance, which could probably be more accurately described as inclusion and equality and fairness. It's nothing earth-shattering at all, particularly not to people who were born in the 50s and later.

It seems to me that a philosophical movement based entirely on inclusion and equality and fairness is better described as "Egalitarianism", which is, by the by, a much more inclusive term.

I like this much better.  If one were to achieve the goals of humanism, more narrowly focused goals like feminism wouldn't be necessary.  Everyone should be respected

I don't really care what anyone else thinks, and debating it is a waste of time, but for my tastes, I simply find things like chainmail bikinis and boob windows boring, and the women I game with think they're lame rather than offensive.

For the sake of anyone who actually cares, here are the sorts of pics of female warriors I really bloody love:

Well, when they launch baseballs toward my house, yes.  And I ain't talking tennis balls, but the hardballs that'll take out a window.  (I've seen it happen.)

"Egalitarianism" is a broader, less specific term that would include, say, the struggle for equality and fairness among races, sexual orientations, and social classes as well as sexes.  Feminism is specifically the movement for equality and fairness.

I would say that feminism is an important movement within the broader movement of egalitarianism.

Quote from: Bill;633235I think she is wearing +5 Field Plate Armor

Well in the typical d&d computer game, at high level, said armor would be roughly as effective as what she's wearing (armies of 10+ level fighters urgh!).
