Elves in D&D always seemed to Be Fench - and really snobbish French at that.

Like they all went to Art School, drank really strange coffee and still had surfer blonde hair....

You kind of see it in some of the background actors in Jackson's ""Lord of the Rings" movies...

I think the Elf subraces have more in common with the Indian caste system. Moreover, the drow have some similarities with the goddess Kali.
