Quote from: Thalaba;563602Tommy, will you be reviewing Apocalypse World? I'm curious about that one.

I like my post apocalyptia to be grim. I want it to be about the struggle for survival in a difficult, near future setting - a setting that makes it obvious that we take our western society for granted. I'd like it to be like Mad Max, The Road, A Boy and His Dog, or Le Dernier Combat, and even Lord of the Flies. For these reasons Atomic Highway was a bit of a let down - not evocative of the mood of Mad Max at all, in my view, and the addition of mutants (future-orcs) only adds a comic book feel. That said, I'm sure you could use the rules to create the setting you want (and I do hope to do this sometime), but I prefer a rulebook that inspires me to do so.

The closest I've seen so far to what I like is the Rubble and Ruin monograph for BRP. It probably swings a little too far toward rules heaviness for me, and in some places (the adventures) the mood is lighter than what I'd like, but it's still the closest thing I've seen on the market.

I can understand that. Especially after reading The Road (which is a GRIPPING book).

I'm not currently planning to review Apocalypse World unless a copy falls in my lap. Everything on the slate is either something I've already owned, had an interest in already, or been asked to review.

Tommy, I recall you really liking Precis Intermedia's Ghostories Expanded and Mean Streets Expanded. After Brett gets Pundit's Olympus game out the door there will also be an expanded version of their post-apocalyptic game for genreDiversion i, EarthAD.2, which might be another option of interest.

Colin Chapman does good work. I gave both Atomic Highway books high marks on my blog (and RPGNow).

Is that the guy with the ape avatar?  Or maybe that's his publishing company over at TBP? If so he's good people and knowledgeable.

I'm a fan of the genreDiversion i games myself. The only reason I haven't picked up EarthAD.2 yet is that I'm waiting for the expanded version.

although not fully an apocalyptic game, I believe BASH sci-fi has a section on running such games

That is correct. About two pages long, to tweak the base game from sci-fi into post apocalyptic.

I just got Reclamation and Other Dust, Reclamation because of Tommy Brownell's excellent review and Other Dust was a pure impulse buy.  Liking them both from the little I have read so far!

I have both Atomic Highway and Irradiated Freaks.  If you have played/ ran it, what was the experience like?  Over the top heroic like Savage worlds, or gritty?  It seems as though it is a fairly "heroic" system from reading, but I am not too sure.

Yes. It is cinematic and gritty. Its like Book of Eli, action packed but people get hurt and die if they aren't careful.

Damage is crazy high on successes, but dodging helps get completely out of the way (unless you use the partial option) I use the partial option so fortune is blown left and right to keep people alive.

Yes its cinematic, but death is easy and cheap in the game, and I'm relatively soft on my players.

I've read some good things about a game called The Mutant Epoch. Anyone here familiar with it?

I've seen reviews, and its apparently a bit crunchy, but understandable crunch. I've not picked it up yet, however.
