This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

In this thread, the subject of random events for regions/nations in fantasy games came up, and I thought about compiling my own list.  In the interests of not threadcrapping, I'm putting this in its own thread.

I've got the following headers: Natural Disasters, Supernatural, Political, Religious, Economic, Scientific/Academic, Military and Social.  I figure on posting one a day, and welcome people kicking them around and tearing them apart to see what significant events that could impact play I didn't include.

Natural Disasters

• Minor/major earthquake/avalanche
• Widespread floods
• Plague
• Wildfires/large section of city burns
• Bad weather (hurricane, tornado, heat wave, deep freeze, blizzard, monsoon, dense fog)
• Drought
• Infestation (locusts, invasive species, destructive insects, vermin)
• Volcano
• Permanent climate change
• Predictable/recurring disaster (spring floods, monsoon season, 12-year locust cycle, recurring volcano, lunar/solar cycles, El Nino)
• Key infrastructure (harbor defenses, dam, aqueduct, roads, fortifications) fall into serious disrepair
• Man-made environmental disaster
This was a cool site, until it became an echo chamber for whiners screeching about how the "Evul SJWs are TAKING OVAH!!!" every time any RPG book included a non-"traditional" NPC or concept, or their MAGA peeners got in a twist. You're in luck, drama queens: the Taliban is hiring.

9. Toxic cloud erupts from enormous subterranean chamber suffocating or  killing all people and animals in a specific area on the surface (Limnic Eruption)...

Blackmoor grew from a single Castle to include, first, several adjacent Castles (with the forces of Evil lying just off the edge of the world to an entire Northern Province of the Castle and Crusade Society's Great Kingdom.

I`d have events that tie two or more hexes together like so:
-The land of hex x is cursed because of something in hex y.
-Someone from hex x has inherited something of great value in hex y but this inheritance is contested by someone from hex z.
-A dragon who lives in hex x has been poisoning hex y.

With all hexes determined randomly.

That sort of thing. Don`t worry if the results seem nonsensical. Explaining things that don`t seem to make any sense are where some of my best setting ideas have come from.

My thanks to GameDaddy ... I hadn't thought along the lines of that section being "Natural Events" as opposed to Disasters.  I'd throw in eclipses, in that case ...

Anyway, the next one on the hit parade, for those of you still with me.
