Are diceless games (like Sengoku Diceless) viable/fun?

I'm chomping at the bit to play in or run a feudal Japaense RPG like Sengoku and see there is a diceless version available using the Active Exploits Diceless 2e rules.  I have never played diceless games before but do own a copy of Lord of Olympus, but I've yet to read it all or play/run it yet.

How do these diceless games stack up to dice games? I love a random element or at least want to avoid whoever has the highest stat and/or best gear automatically wins any encounter.

How do these games play? Do you think it would work with Sengoku?

I'm most used to playing Amber Diceless, but I've played a number of homebrew diceless games inspired by Amber. For the last several years at AmberCon NorthWest in Portland, I've been running a Chinese-themed Amber variant called the Jade Throne -- using all the Amber Diceless rules, but in a wuxia setting.

Most of the game works the same as how dice-using RPGs work - there is new input, and the players explore what they're going to do.

Combat is mostly about key choices in changing situations. So rather than going toe-to-toe repeating the same action against an enemy for several rounds, as GM I will give the players choices about how they will use their abilities. So, for example, "The wall around the window has blown up. You can stay safe from the blast but lose some time against the incoming assassins, or you could take a little damage and have the edge on them as they come in through the hole. What do you do?" Then I'll give out some results, and move on to their next choice.

I generally avoid Japan as a setting, but I think it would work fine for there. Without the powers that are in Amber, I might want to come up with some other ways to make PCs distinct - like via advantages including contacts, allies, and perks.

Doesn't the Pundit have something to do with Precis Intermedia? Does anyone know how the diceless system works in their games, the Active Exploits system, 2e?

Hi. Pundit wrote Lords of Olympus, which uses a different diceless system (like Amber) from Active Exploits. The latter is a resource management system of sorts, in which you apply effort from your abilities each turn, but not to the point of over-exertion without consequences. The system is quite old now and I really need to do a rewrite at some point, though it would be a bit different when I do. Active Exploits is a free download. http://rpg.deals/ae

I've played Undying and found it great. Like what I've read of Nobilis. But don't like what I've read of Amber, as it feels too much GM fiat dependent.

So the concept is good but, as with any other type of game, it will depend on each specific implementation and how it fits your tastes.
