This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

My first hands on experience with BRP.

So it's like Gurps, where dodging is automatic? (Upthread, LLew mentioned it was rolled as a reaction.) Meaning combat is two rolls: I roll to hit, and the defender rolls to dodge?
Or is it like Hero, where dodging requires me to sacrifice an action? (Usually my next attack, since I "abort" to dodge.)
And if dodge is a skill, what is to stop me from maxing out that single skill, so my character can never be hit?

(Maybe I need to crack open that PDF of the Gold Book I have, somewhere on my hard drive...)

It's a reaction. Assumed in most cases to be automatic.

It's not technically automatic but people always do it if they can because there's every reason to do it and no reason not to do it the vast majority of the time.

I find Rune quest too fiddly but I love GMing Dragonbane, my players sing its praises too.

Well...Amazon had it for $37 so I went ahead and bought it. Claimed "softcover", arrived today and clearly hardback, albeit looks like POD. One thing I don't care for is the type of paper they used, would have preferred the slicker paper, book would have been much thinner.

Hopefully I didn't waste my money!
It takes considerable knowledge just to realize the extent of your own ignorance.

I finished reading the book tonight. And I am pleasantly surprised. It delivered everything I wanted in a universal game system. Straight up.

So yeah. I am very happy with my purchase.

I've played various BRP games for years, you can get a wide array  of genres by tuning the options. I have one system I use for our tactical combat scifi game with wild psionics, another for one-shots or after-work games, and another for horror. Whether it's strike ranks and gear or porn or simple initiative and rituals, it's easy to get what you want out of it. If you have the BGB you don't really need the BRP UGE, but if you're publishing for BRP, it's the best SRD ever made.

Give Open Quest a shot. Simple, clean, d100 chassis. Then add any detail you want.

Yes, I've had my eye on this and will eventually get it. As for Dragonbane, I don't like that monsters automatically hit. Can't the player characters dodge or something?

Hixanthrope

Agreed, the problem with that kind of thing is it makes a swarm of flies the most dangerous enemy in the world.

Yes, they can dodge.

Mythras is definitely the best iteration of BRP. I suggest you take a look at it - there's an ORC-licensed version of the rules called Mythras Imperative.
