This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Games that hate mankind (AKA The Nephilim Law)

Quote from: malleus arianorumHmm, must of been a secret cult. I never knew anyone with a kind word for the early Mummy stuff.
It seems to mesh with what went in in my area, as well as the almost universal loathing of the new book.  That one didn't piss people off nearly as much as Hunter did though.

EDIT: Although maybe not.  Nowadays you can usually find a decent split between hate/love for Hunter, but I can't say as outside David and CA's comments in this thread I'veever really heard anything positive about nMummy.

Wait. We're talking about the original Mummy (the thin book) and original Hunter, right? Because I think the fan base for those games comprise of well... me.

The original Mummy (and in my case the LARP writeup), and the original Hunters Hunted were nifty books.

Mummy later got a big shiny hardbound corebook called Mummy: the Resurrection that had almost nothing to do with the original except the name, which pissed people off.

Hunter's Hunted got it's revamp as Hunter the Reckoning, and went from being a game about normal humans who occasionally used some supernatural means like ritual magic or faith to get a leg up, to superpowered humans with a gift from God who were all basically insane.

Neither of them had anything to do really with the books they were supposedly based on, and that frankly pissed me the hell off.

Man, I so missed the 90s. We just stumbled right along playing RQ. I had no idea that the industry was tanking or that dorky goths were taking over the hobby. Where were those kids in 1982? Eh?

Hey man, goth got started in the 80's, it was jsut still subculture then.

By the time Vampire got ahold of it, it was full blown pop culture.

Spike

I knew a lot of people who liked the original Mummy, but by the time it came out as it's own hardback I was out of touch with WW for the most part.

I never thought of Hunter: the Reckoning as a 'full game' version of Hunters Hunted.  Dunno, Maybe i was to busy playing games of bloodsucking superheroes to really notice the Hunters...:p
For you the day you found a minor error in a Post by Spike and forced him to admit it, it was the greatest day of your internet life.  For me it was... Tuesday.

For the curious: Apparently, in person, I sound exactly like the Youtube Character The Nostalgia Critic.   I have no words.

By the time it got its own hardback, it was a different game all together -- a totally different concept.  The original Mummy was distinctly non-WoD, quite out of step with its mates.  I don't know that I'd call it pro-humanity, but it was definitely non-anti-human.  For all of their immortality, the mummies were still human, could sire or bear children, and maintained a vested interest in the affairs of humanity.  When I first got the book, I imagined a family centered on it mummy ancestor who kept all of his descendants organised, and could potentially give any coterie of vampires of all but the most rarified generations a serious run for their money.

No, no.  It really wasn't a full-fledged version  Hunters Hunted at all.  That decision to make it something different met with vocal complaints from HH fans who really did want a more pro-humanity game.  As it stood, though, HH didn't fit the standard White Wolf game mold, with "archetypal" sub-groups that each have specialised powers, and all that.

Funny.  Looking back on the 90s, Mummy and Hunters Hunted were two of my favorite games from the era -- certainly two of my favorite WW products.

I never really got the whole nWoD vibe. I'm pretty surprised they would revise stuff like Mummy & Hunter, because I was under the impression they were stand alone games.

The new Mummy and Hunter weren't nWOD, they were oWOD. As far as I know no nWOD versions are planned.
I am no longer posting here or reading this forum because Pundit has regularly claimed credit for keeping this community active. I am sick of his bullshit for reasons I explain here and I don\'t want to contribute to anything he considers to be a personal success on his part.

I recommend The RPG Pub as a friendly place where RPGs can be discussed and where the guiding principles of moderation are "be kind to each other" and "no politics". It\'s pretty chill so far.

In a sense, I suppose you could call them transitional-WoD.  They were part of that phase where WW was radically overhauling their existing lines, stopping just shy of releasing a wholesale redux of the WoD.  They were both a very far cry from the earlier oWoD.
