This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

And finally-- the surprise hit of GenCon!

Feel free to post what you thought the surprise hit of GenCon was.

For me, it was this:

Kayuda Maps. It's like a google map system for roleplaying games. Check this out:

  • It's browser based
  • you can upload your own artwork or use their map builder.
  • Its online. So no matter where you go, if you have an internet connection, you can get to the campaign map.
  • It's zoomable from 256-miles scale to a 5x5' grid.
  • It's annotatable.***
  • It's FREE. Ad-supported, but free.

*** You can build a map, drop flags onto it, and then click each flag to drop encounters onto it. This is a GREAT way to do a sandbox style campaign. Zoomability to different scales is totally kick-ass.  You can also use your own dungeon maps, upload them, and simply do click-open 'google maps' style area flags and annotate room descriptions and encounters.

You can share them, you can make them public, you can collaborate on them. Very very cool application. And it's free.

It would also be an interesting way to set up..oh...I don't know...say...a Living Campaign with people all over the world? Maybe called Silverosprey? :D

I'm seriously considering loading my middle Kingdoms map into this.

After looking at them, your maps were one of the first things I thought of, SP.

BTW - I'll be in Holland in a couple of weeks...

Hey, this was my pick in my Gen Con thread, too!  Awesome, awesome, awesome.  The guys at the booth were right--it was dead sexy.

My 2nd place pick for sheer awesomeness has to be Campaign Coins.  But they're like $60 and Kayuda is freeeee.  :p

Non-RPG-related, my wife picked up Gold Digger, which is really simple, but really fun.

Anyhow, I did a test run with Kayuda, putting campaign notes and events on the nodes on my homebrew campaign map of Irrin.  Check it out (click on the nodes for more description), see what you think:

Okay, that map website looks really frickin' cool.  It's just a shame it's still in closed alpha and I'm probably gonna have to wait for the beta to start to try it out.

Actually, you can get in on it right now!  It should let you sign up, Private Alpha aside...

Yeah, I signed up this morning.  I'm still waiting too.

I'm guessing that Zachary has more power than he realized and he's swamping them :D
