This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

I assume that this post is aimed at the recent blow up over on the targa site over the D&D with pornstars video which caused at least two bloggers to quit blogging.  Chgowiz, who started targa (iirc), even went so far as to take down his site entirely.  It's all rather silly to see grown men act like this.

I get your sentiment. That part of the risk of putting stuff out. That person going to get a wide range of reactions that runs across the gamut. I am sure there are people who think I am an ass for putting the Majestic Wilderlands.

The bottom line is so what? Even if all your worst fears come to pass how it going to effect what you are producing and buying the stuff you like. Unlike Dungeons & Dragons itself no one person can dominate the OSR. The open gaming license ensures that. The fact that anybody can open a Lulu account and offer printed books just reinforces my point.

In short there is no real reason to worry about what somebody doing in their own area of the OSR. If they piddle in their corner the mess is theirs and they will suffer the consequences in terms of ridicule, drop in readership or people voting with their wallets.

True.  I just never liked the guy is the bottom line.  He always seemed pretentious. full of himself, and full of shit.

BTW... Big news...

I hereby announce that I am closing my blog, for exactly 57 seconds, this coming Thursday night at 2:57 am.

That is all.

QuoteI don't get it. It's like everyone assumes that Grognardia speaks for the OSR... which is complete and utter bullshit.

I was just going to say, "Hey, that guy at Grognardia is a right awful prick with a completely distorted sense of self importance!" — but, uh, yeah. He's the only OSR guy I can think of off the top of my head who keeps his personal volume knob turned up to Smug Asshole all of the time. YMMV, of course.

Quote from: thedungeondelver;369381So this is my request, what I ask of you.  Quit worrying about who has the most linkbacks.  Quit scrabbling to be the "authoritative voice in the wilderness".  Ask yourself a question: what am I doing today that makes Original, Basic or Advanced D&D hang on?  Is it pontificating over silly concepts like GNS and how D&D does/does not fit in to them?  Is it trying to reinvent the wheel?  Or is it writing adventures, doing artwork and maps, announcing that you'll be at a 'con and inviting people to come - or inviting them to come to your local games?
...
Just...just game for goodness' sake.  Don't worry about a revival or renaissance.  It's here!  It's been going on since 2e came out!  Why don't you come over and join us?
That's a good approach, and why I think projects like Fight On!, Knockspell, Monsters of Myth or the efforts of the Dragonsfoot editorial team (who seem to be mentioned little in these discussions) to put out interesting content, the One Page Dungeon idea and the contest, just to name some, have been the most valuable collaborative things in the last few years.

I do think the complaints about the problematic aspects tend to be overblown, though, and invariably attract the voices of people who plain don't like old school games in general or some of the directions the scene has explored in particular. That's inevitable, but unproductive. Here, let me unfurl my banner for all these folks: "I don't game for you."

There. That's better.

Quote from: Benoist;369396Honestly, I'm tired of these tirades about "the OSR this", "the OSR blogosphere that"...

NAME NAMES. Post links to examples of what you're talking about.
Point the finger, because I don't know who the fuck you are talking about. On the OSR scene, you've got guys from dragonsfoot, guys from K&K Alehouse, guys writing blogs like Akrasia, or Rob Conley, or Chgowiz, or Zach, or Jeff Rients, next to other guys like James M and Grognardia, you've got guys on mailing lists, and guys doing the Castle of the Mad Archmage like the Greyhawk Grognard.

Who the HELL are you talking about? Seriously? We're talking about vastly different types of crowds, interests, personalities, etc here.

I don't get it. It's like everyone assumes that Grognardia speaks for the OSR... which is complete and utter bullshit.

I agree.  If someone thinks I'm being a douchebag, just tell me.  (My wife can attest that sometimes I just too stupid to realize when I'm being a jerk.)  If it's someone else you're talking about, let's talk about them.  I like most of the people in the scene but sometimes folks get carried away.  Grognardia takes itself a bit too seriously sometimes.  Raggi at Lamentations can be a little shrill.  TARGA can't get its shit together.  There are legitimate criticisms to be made, but the group is big enough, diverse enough, nonlocalized enough that these sweeping generalizations, even if accurate, won't do much to help the situation.
