Title: Am I a Bad Person for Liking Co-Op Frostgrave?
Post by: Greentongue on April 16, 2020, 09:20:02 AM
Frostgrave is a skirmish game and not an "official RPG" yet I like it almost more than many RPGs.

Am I a Bad Person for not missing all the specific rules "required" for role playing a miniature?

Should I feel bad about not role playing my followers or even my Apprentice much?

Is it bad to enjoy teaming up with another wizard, taking on monsters and collecting loot?
(Sure brings back the fun from when I first played D&D!)

Frostgrave is a great little game, fast playing, focused and clean.  I think the absence of a referee probably shifts it a little farther from rpgs than something like Chaos in Cairo but it's not why you're a bad person ;)

I think it's silly to assume you're a bad person for choosing to enjoy a hobby in a different way. So long as you and your friends are having fun and behaving responsibly, play whatever systems you want!

Skirmish mini games have always inspired RPG-like play.  For years, people used Rogue Trader (40k 1st Edition) as an RPG-like.  RPGs themselves began as literal single-man scale wargames, so I'd argue you're not really doing anything weird.

Just co-op wouldn't really push it far enough over into RPG-land to scratch my itch, like David said, I think the GM role would be essential.

I play IronSworn with friends which is a PbtA derivative which can be played either with a DM, co-op or solo.

It leans slightly more towards a story game vs a simulationist game which is very handy when playing without a DM.

You are not a bad person :-)  There are many ways to play Frostgrave.  I have played it co-op, and in one version, as a GM-less dungeon crawl.  You can read about that variant on my blog: https://takeittothetable.blogspot.com/search/label/Frostgrave?updated-max=2019-03-25T19:52:00-04:00&max-results=20&start=1&by-date=false
I always prefer a coop game to a competitive one.  I don't get too immersed in my character when playing Frostgrave, the way I do in an RPG.  Often it's the lowly soldier who pulls off some amazing feat that becomes the object of my affection, rather than the wizard or apprentice.

Frostgrave is excellent.  Every time I have played a 3 or 4 player game, there is coop going on, usually in cutting the throat of the player with a perceived upper hand.  The coop tends to not last too long though.

Rangers of Shadow Dark looks really good too.
I wonder if you could play a Co-Op with 2 teams, one headed by a Wizard and the other by a Ranger?
There is even a Captain that can be played.

LOL!! People are talking about going back to the roots of D&D  (OGL)  and I'm just slipping a little further back.
Back to when Chainmail was a thing and people anthropomorphized little miniature figures.

I'm a Mordheim and Necromunda fan. I'm all good for adding roleplaying to squad vs. squad battles. I got The Others: Seven Sins boardgame because that game definitely hits the cooperative team of PCs vs. the terrain full of villains with storyline sprinkles.

But you're in Orlando so I couldn't resist!
