This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Please be aware that the International Gamer Geek Association has now introduced an accreditation system. Points will be talied on a monthly basis, with the following categories, with GP of course meaning "Geek Points".
  • Not a Geek = 0 or less GP
  • Somewhat geeky = 50 GP
  • Complete Geek = 100 GP
  • More Freak Than Geek, But Good To Borrow Books From = 200 GP
Examples of getting GP are as follows,
  • Play one game, 10 points
  • GM one game, 20 points
  • Buy a core rulebook, 50 points
  • Buy a splatbook, 10 points
  • Writing one of these to completed publishable status scores quadruple points; writing it to incomplete status and publishing it anyway scores octuple points
  • Argue about the rules, 1 point each instance
  • Storm out of the game session over a point of rules, 10 points
  • Storm out over xp, 20 points
  • Eat cheetos, 5 points
  • Order pizza, 10 points
  • with anchovies, 20 points
  • Eat healthy snacks, -10 points
  • Ask to finish early because you have work tomorrow, -10 points
  • Miss a game session due to going out with a girlfriend or boyfriend, -50 points
  • Arguing over the superiority of one game system over the other: 5 per person arguing with you, per instance of arguing.
  • Posting about gaming on an RPG forum: 1pt/post
  • Telling someone, not involved in your game, about your character: 25pts (bonus 25 pts if talking to a complete stranger)
  • Drawing pictures of your character: 5 pts
  • Commissioning someone else to draw pictures of your character: 25 pts
  • For creating a character that wears sunglasses (other than in a Cyberpunk or Vampire game): 5 pts
  • For creating a character that wields a katana (other than in a Samurai game): 5 pts
  • For creating a character that wears a trenchcoat (other than in a pulp game): 5 pts
  • For creating a character that wears a trenchcoat and sunglasses and wields a katana, 20 points (bonus 5 for the combination!)
  • Creating a character that wears a trenchcoat, sunglasses, and wields two katanas, 30 points
  • Creating a lesbianstripperninja character, 35 points.
  • Creating a lesbianstripperninja who wears a trenchcoat (over her skintight black fauxleather suit), sunglasses, and wields two katanas: see Table 2: Accreditation for the International Society for Catpissmen

That's great.  :)

I think you are underselling splatbooks.  Since they tend to be more obscure and specialised than a core rulebook, they should be worth a bit more than 10 points.  I think it takes a serious geek to purchase the "Complete Guide to Bohemian Ear Spoons".

FWIW, I will have to hand in my membership card unless you expand the criteria.  By my calculations, I have about 70 points in a typical month... even less for December since we went on gaming hiatus for the holidays!

If you approve of the character described in this thread, that's about 500 GP. That should boost your total up to safe levels!

But I'm sure you can think of other things to win you GP.

Some potential additions;

  • For arguing over the superiority of one game system over the other: 1 pt per 2 minutes of arguing
  • Posting about gaming on an RPG forum: 1 pt per 5 posts
  • Telling someone, not involved in your game, about your character: 25pts (bonus 25 pts if talking to a complete stranger)
  • Drawing pictures of your character: 5 pts
  • Commissioning someone else to draw pictures of your character: 25 pts

Stuff added! I'll change the "per x minutes" bit, though, too much potential for abuse. I mean, does the minute when you were strangling the guy count as part of the argument, or only when you're talking over each-other?

Based on your other thread, maybe you could add:

  • For creating a character that wears sunglasses (other than in a Cyberpunk or Vampire game): 5 pts
  • For creating a character that wields a katana (other than in a Samurai game): 5 pts
  • For creating a character that wears a trenchcoat (other than in a pulp game): 5 pts
  • For creating a character that wears a trenchcoat and sunglasses and wields a katana: see Table 2: Accreditation for the International Society for Catpissmen

Added! With some editing and elaboration.

Is playing the same game twice a month worth 10 points or 20?

The points are for each time you play. It's definitely more geeky to play (say) four times a week, than once a month.

I'm undecided as to whether it's more geeky to obsess over just one game, or to pay a variety of games. Obsessive interest and knowledge of something is pretty much the definition of "geek"; but gamer geeks tend to buy a zillion different games and thoroughly read in the game store a zillion others, so...
