This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Aliens in sci-fi RPGs: Which ones succeeded or didn't?

Quote from: Shipyard Locked;752892Something I've wondered lately: have many us always been bothered by animal-hybrid aliens or did they start to feel wrong after we discovered that creepy furries were a 'thing'?

I was not enamored before I learned of furries. However, I did finally "get it" as to why animal-hybrid species are a thing - post furries exposure. Some people really like them, and some people REALLY like them. :-)  They are not complete deal breakers for me, I just prefer to keep them to a minimum or eliminate them altogether. However, if there's a story line in the setting that hybrids are failed genetic experiments (ala Tank Girl or Dark Angel) I'm good with that. It gives a edgy "people playing monsters" vibe I dig.

Once during a Vampire LARP a young hot girl was in "cat form" and spent some time purring and pining for my attention (leg rubbing, lap sitting...). She wasn't in a costume per se, just some ears and street clothes. I rather appreciated the aesthetic at that moment...

Quote from: zend0g;752912Not really. I have no problem with Vargr - canines that were uplifted from Earth by the Droyne. One is a fairly fleshed out alien race and the other are freaks.

This sounds like an arbitrary distinction. What distinguishes the vargr and aslan from other detailed write-ups of space cats/foxes/otters/whateverthefuck?

The detailed examination given their psychology, societies, and cultures. They are treated with depth as an independant race and not just as humans in funny rubber suits like on Star Trek.
"Meh."

You haven't read any of the Alien Modules from Classic Traveller, have you? Get ahold of one of them and give it a read, you'll find it overflowing with good stuff.

Traveller has a tendency to give it's aliens a decent ecology, but it is also a game where humans are given the same treatment.

FWIW, let me plug the old OLD RPG Justifiers here as well. Nothing BUT humanoid animals, and looooong before the Furries subculture evolved and made it squicky for everyone else. Long live Bug, the 6-limbed mantoid! Quad pistols FTW.

Just fun.

I still love Justifiers, the science is interesting, playing uplifts is interesting, and the logic for PC's is awesome.

Sadly we didn't get the update that was supposed to be coming a long while back due to time, and instead the rights were sold to someone in Germany? Who uses it for novels/etc and perhaps a game, but not in English.

Going back to Star Frontiers for a moment, I consider the yazirian the weakest (but not actually bad) species in that game's good line-up. While it rather cleverly covers the "fuzzy beast alien" cliche while still being its own thing, I've had trouble accepting the science of their gliding abilities and the ugly inconvenience that their wing flaps impose on equipment and clothing.

You could easily use StarCluster 3 Uplifts to play Justifiers, Tim.
