This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Abortion d20.

I'd reply, but GRIM just did it for me.

Quote from: GRIMIt is a legitimate topic with a great deal of applicability in games and the content of the book as proposed looks generally useful should you decide to run a game incorporating those political and social themes.

I agree entirely and as a writer for a product line that the hyena-pack have described as "d20 FATAL", I have concerns about this type of dogpile

That said, this writer has deliberately set out to court controversey so he should expect to reap what he sows

I have no problem with LPJ stuff. The would be GTA, ultraviolent stuff. If thats what a person likes, what ever good for them. But this is stupid. Just trying to be shocking for the sake of shocking. Besides any of the other issues even if you were going to run a camnpaign about this. Do you need to buy a five page PDF on it? Buy it because its edgy, but not really useful is a dumb concept. I'm sure many idiots will fall for.
Vive la mort, vive la guerre, vive le sacré mercenaire

Ronin\'s Fortress, my blog of RPG\'s, and stuff

Blackleaf

That's a pretty lame setting for a game.

QuoteNo issue in history has divided the United States people as much as the issue of legalized abortion.

Now, I'm not an American... so I could be wrong... but I would have said the Civil War was a little bit more dividing.

And that would be a really COOL setting for a game.

Except he couldn't try and ape Grand Theft Auto doing that. ;)

Here's what is said is in the 24 page thingamajig

• History of Abortion in America

I would find that useful - assuming some effort has been made to present an unbiased view.

• Protest tactics and strategies for Pro-Life and Pro-Choice supporters

Has use beyond the specific situation of the booklet.

• New Advanced Class: The Abortion Provider,

This one is a bit stupid, I'll give you. However as a character concept - the street doctor riding the line between morality and exploitation - it isn't bad.

• New Intermediary Classes: Clinic Defender, Sidewalk Counselor, Blogger, Irregular and ER Intern,

I'm not big on classes, but again as character concepts these are OK.

• Campaign Styles: The Medical Campaign vs. the Abortion Protester.

With the popularity of medical dramas and pseudo-medical dramas I can see this being useful.

• Nearly 20 new medical and political feats including Flash Mob, Medical Immortality, Reconstructive Surgery and Street Demonstration.

Again, sounds like they have use beyond the immediate.

And Choice & Blood isn't actually that bad as a title come to that.

Quote from: JimBobOzIt's not a matter of being "politcally correct" or not. It's just lame and stupid as a topic for a campaign.

I know that you like to be Mr Super Shock Edgy Cool, Grim, but this ain't super shock edgy cool, it's just lame. That's pretty common for stuff which tries too hard to shock, but still.

Exactly. It's just retarded.
In order to qualify as a roleplaying game, a game design must feature:

1. A traditional player/GM relationship.
2. No set story or plot.
3. No live action aspect.
4. No win conditions.

Don't like it? Too bad.

Can't WoTC pull his d20 license for being too explicit?

Isn't there a decency clause in the d20 license?  Or is this thing OGL?

It has the d20 Modern logo on it, but I'm not sure of the significance of that.  I know that the YotZ line doesn't use the logo, but then (other than the OGL at the back) I can't see anything in the PDF for Marauders that even mentions what system it's for

I don't play d20, otherwise I could see the potential of using it in ongoing investigative/conspiracy or police type games.

But then I like social issues and politics in my gaming.

The clause allowing removal of licence was added due to concerns, it seems, over the Book of Erotic Fantasy. It is extremely undefined at present what would constitute a reason for them to pull it, though they don't have to give a reason and people can default to OGL branding in any case.

Unless it inlcudes pictures of chopped up babies I doubt it qualifies for half-arsed censure in this way.

I don't buy d20 material (too much risk of me accidentally using someone else's IP) and I've either already done or could easily do my own research if I wanted to include this kind of stuff, but again, I could see the use of it

I could research it myself, but I think an insider (the US) and a gamer's perspective on the whole mystifying controversy would help me out.

Good point.  The fact that abortion is only really controversial in the US and certain parts of the developing world makes this product even less useful to me

I'd just like to chime in here.

I've spoken to Louis personally (by phone) and worked with him, I did the d20 Modern version of his Haven:City of Violence setting.

He's a nice guy, he paid me well and he paid me on time.

That puts him light years ahead of other people in the industry who are considered one of the cool kids, like, say, Mystic Eye.

This particular product, while not my cup of tea (it doesn't shock me- it just doesn't interest me) was released by Devil's Workshop, an imprint of Louis' company, meaning it's a seperate company that he helps release product.

Which means he probably didn't conceive of the product and didn't write it.

In short, that makes a lot of the things being said about Louis and this product inaccurate to the best of my knowledge.
