This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

So I guess some people are too retarded even for SW. Maybe try Barbarians of Lemuria?

And if they are thinking of fucking with the CoC game system for the 7th edition, they should REALLY rethink their strategy. This is going to backlash BIG TIME. You don't fuck with 31 years of continuity "just because".

You do if you actually want to sell some books. Look at the advice in this thread; people are all like go ahead and use 5th; it's the same as the others, you don't need the new edtion.

If I were in charge of their marketing I'd totally want to release a new edtion it will get people talking about their games again if nothing else. The free publicity alone would be a good enough reason to do it.

I suspect that if they release a new or significantly altered rule set that they will sell more books in the first month than they have in the last decade. They are a notoriously stagnant company, worrying about backlash over rules change is about as sensible in their situation as the cook of a sinking ship stopping off to clean the galley whilst on the way to the lifeboats.

Furthermore, they've released 6 editions of the same game with mountains of support. Any obligation they have to their fans has long since been met. Their fans should be willing to wish them well on whatever direction they wish to go. But they won't because... entitlement.  They'll still buy the new book, though.

On the other hand if they want to make a new game perhaps they should go and make a new game.

It depends, if their motive is to safeguard the tender feelings of their fans, you are absolutely correct. However if they wish to make money, not so much.

If they wish to make some money they will not make a new game for the same reason Marvel didn't replace ultimate Spider-Man with a new hero with a new name after his death, but rather went with a legacy hero with the same name- that is to say, because nobody is going to buy that new thing- not like they are going  to buy Spider-Man or Call of Cthulhu. Chaosium has made plenty of new games, but they're known for CoC.

Would D&D 3e/4e/next have gotten a fragemnt of the attention they have without being attached to D&D?
Nope.

Could that possibly be because they've done a good job of managing the brand?

Are you in the business of selling core rulebooks or are you in the business of selling a product line?

One of the features of CoC is the vast library of high quality support material.

Much like what happened to GURPS, I suspect throwing away that library of support material (without any real ability or expectation that they'd be able to replace it with 7E-compatible material) will likely torpedo the game entirely.

No reboot edition of an RPG has ever succeeded unless there is clear, deep, and widespread dissatisfaction in the existing customer base. Maybe CoC 7E will be the one that beats the odds.

But I doubt it.

Hey, I wish 'em well. But if 7E is a reboot edition, I won't be buying it. I will also be telling the players in my CoC campaigns that they can buy any edition except 7E (which means they'll stop being Chaosium customers). And I probably won't be buying any supplements produced for 7E.

That's not spite. That's just me not being interested in the product. Nor am I likely to become interested in such a product until they've managed to duplicate the built-in advantages CoC currently has for me (experience with the system and a massive library of support material). Since it took 18 years for the former and 31 years for the latter, I'm guessing it'll be awhile before they pull that off.

I think you need to define success before we can move any further. If you are talking anything but monetary success, we are having two different conversations.

Chaosium has done well with their D100 system over the decades.  Lots of people like percentile rolls.  I still see all kinds of Chaosium books in my local store and in others.  The worst ever thing I heard from a CoC player was that they were too young to understand the Cthulhu mythos because they were not familiar with H. P. Lovecraft's work.  Their character lived through a campaign of all things.  Even spoke to Cthulhu.  Maybe even killed the beast!  They still had great fun playing the game, even though they played it wrong.  :)
