Apparently his local store didn't care about the street date.

He's revealing all sorts of details.
Battle doesn\'t need a purpose; the battle is its own purpose. You don\'t ask why a plague spreads or a field burns. Don\'t ask why I fight.

The Men In Black will be by shortly to have a word with that shop.

Doesn't seem like he's spoiled too much so far. But I quit reading after the fifth or sixth "broken promise" post.

Necrozius

Ah well to each their own: what I'd read from those spoilers seemed pretty awesome and modular. I don't know about broken promises, though. If people feel that way, that's pretty unfortunate.

A part of me dreads that this will be a PR flop. As long as I can get my copy of this book before the ship sinks, I'll be very happy.

I went through the thread, and the impression I get is that this will be a solid DMG with some nifty options and the last nail in the coffin of the marketing hype of "a D&D that will please everyone/can do all styles of the game."

I wouldn't worry. Based on initial sales and what I've seen and heard about the future, my guess is that WotC will keep these three books and the screen 'evergreen', put out a product every now and then to keep the brand alive, but use it as a source of IP and brand awareness for other projects and rely largely on fans and licensees to provide support to the RPG side.

Saplatt

I wouldn't worry about any ships sinking. The people who are complaining the loudest wouldn't have bought it no matter what it contained.

I think it will sell just fine.

Will

I'm tentatively pleased that it sounds like you can remove or add magic items as you want without really fucking with balance.
This forum is great in that the moderators aren\'t jack-booted fascists.

Unfortunately, this forum is filled with total a-holes, including a bunch of rape culture enabling dillholes.

So embracing the \'no X is better than bad X,\' I\'m out of here. If you need to find me I\'m sure you can.

I see many people depending on the DMG to "save the game" for them. That is a ludicrous notion. If that's the expectation they set up for the book, it's clearly not going to happen.

But I'm very pleased to see that the one thing I really wanted in this edition that I wasn't sure I would get are rules for Morale. I'm over-joyed to see that they will be in the DMG.

Most don't actually play the game either or can't grok that things aren't going to work like 3e (especially the multiclassing) because they're looking for ways to bust the system. Also I saw a lot of complaints about how magic items break the bounded accuracy thing and that there is no WBL. It seems some can't believe that you may never get a magic item and you'll be fine or that if you do get the best of the best magic items that your opponents will have the same. So it all comes out in the wash and is able to accomodate various playstyles.
Don\'t mess with cats we kill wizards in one blow.;)

I don't understand why there's so much dissatisfaction. Everything I've read until now from people was basically "5E is the best version of D&D they've made and finally obsoletes 3.5/Pathfinder, there's no reason not to play it."
Battle doesn\'t need a purpose; the battle is its own purpose. You don\'t ask why a plague spreads or a field burns. Don\'t ask why I fight.

tenbones

The dissatisfaction is purely from noobs who want specific answers that until 5e, they had a table or a chart expressly tell them the answer to: How to measure the CR of a monster, How much gold a PC *should* have by Level, How much a Magic Item is Worth, blah blah blah.

They're looking at the game as mechanical confection rather than a description of how-to rules that you're supposed to make your own at your table.

I have a table full of noobs right now. And their minds are fucking blown that I'm running the game with a PHB and an MM and nothing else. And we have intrigue and politics, and assassins guilds warring in the streets, and kingdoms spreading their imperial clutches over independent city-states through coercion. PC's are working on building their own merchant empires and one is trying to build his own temple dedicated to destroy the very city the temple rests in...

there are no fucking rules for this shit. You just sit down and play. Don't sweat the small shit. It's easy to overthink shit when your imagination has had its balls cut off by the numbers in a chart - as opposed to letting the chart inspire you to do your own thing.

This is what is shocking me most about the entire release of 5th Edition. I had no idea that such a chunk of D&D players were approaching it with so little imagination, requiring a DMG to tell them how to think in order to play.

If it didn't have the magic items in it, i don't think i'd be picking up the DMG. I still might not. I have about 3 versions of most d&d magic items and it's not too tricky to convert to 5e, so i might not bother picking it up at all.

I'm still horrified at the stuff people were saying back in 3e, like 'oh GREAT now it's an official supplement so I have to use it.'

Man, wut?

I'm pretty sure I've said this about every DMG every written.
