I'm pretty happy with the artwork in the PHB, but I have noticed 3 or 4 pieces that are recycled, having appeared in at least one other publication. I have no beef with that at all. Good, evocative art is welcome wherever it might have been used before, in my book.
That being said, once I noticed and identified the first, I had to flip through the book with an eye toward finding retreads.
Here are the ones I noticed. If I noticed these, then surely there must be others I didn't notice.
The first one I noticed was the Druid with antler headdress and the tiger companion appeared in 4E's Primal Power.
The hydra battle tapestry that was called out somewhere as an easter egg (which seems like a stretch) previously appeared in Dragon #418.
The wizard blasting someone in the back with fire around page 205 previously appeared in Dragon #405.
Anybody notice any others?
The only other one I know about is the Dragonborn sorcerer, which I think was in Dungeon at some point. Overall I think there's less recycled art than the 4e core have and as long as it's not completely hideous I don't mind a little recycling here and there.
As long the books doesn't go with the Rifts route, with recycled art within the same book, I'm cool.
I guess they figured no one ever saw the 4e art...

Indeed I am sure the 10 people that were keen enough to buy the last 4e books will be so anti 5e that no one will ever notice
hah! Yeah, I opened the PHB upon unpacking it and the first page I opened to and got to say "Well well well, if it isnt our old friend Mister Retread Art."
Page 9. That is the cover piece from Ghosts of Dragonspear Castle.
heh-heh.
Nothing wrong with retread art if youve never seen it before. Allows new players to get a look at something they might have missed, and gets more mileage out of very costly art pieces.

That book was a Gencon exclusive. I am happy to see such a cool piece of art make it to a general release book.
History repeats itself.
The 4E Monster Manual recycled the 3.5 MM's illustration of the vampire.
And I could swear I've seen the 5E MM rakshasa somewhere before ...

er, its still for sale on the D&D Classics page... 18$ for the PDF.
But yes. I agree. As said. Its good to see retreat art if youve never seen it before or havent seen it in ages.
I feel like I've seen the dude on pg. 61 before. Although it could be just because it reminds me of JRPG art rather than having seen the specific piece.
Looks like more in the Sword Coast Adventurers Guide.
page 6. Thats from I think an issue of Dragon?
same for on on page 42 and 49 and maybe 75.
But the one I personally would like to know the origin of is the piece on page 102. That looks really familliar. Like its been a book cover maybe?
On the other hand. Good to see WOTC finally using some of the new art they commissioned back in 2012.
