This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

5e playtest discussions have shown me the greatest danger to our hobby

So what's this thread about then? How are we supposed to ruin the hobby?

I wasn't talking just about 4e fans.

But big shocker, you weren't paying attention but lept to a conclusion that justifies your victimhood.

Pretty ironic considering that was exactly what I was complaining about in my first post.
D&D is not an "everyone gets a ribbon" game.  If you\'re stupid, your PC will die.  If you\'re an asshole, your PC will die (probably from the other PCs).  If you\'re unlucky, your PC may die.  Point?  PC\'s die.  Get over it and roll up a new one.

No, that just proves that there are legions of 3x fans out there. :)

Benoist is correct TCO isn't representative of the bulk of 4e fans most of them are far less vitriolic about 5e.

How rpg gamers tend to be whiny bitches, especially Dnd fans.:D

So... what you're saying is the solution is to get a bunch of geeks laid?  Awesome... World peace couldn't be far off if we pulled that rabbit out of the hat.

Quote from: thedungeondelver;547889You people wrecked the hobby, this is objectively true.

Well... fuck!

All these years I thought I was just having a good time, playing 4E a couple of times a month, looking over my shoulder whenever I engaged in actual role-playing ('cuz I'd been warned it was, like, illegal to do that in 4E; the RPG patrol would confiscate your D&D books and shit, no saving throw), and now it turns out that what I was actually doing was WRECKING THE WHOLE FUCKING HOBBY?

What, you mean, for EVERYONE?

Well, fuck me sideways... I'll just stop doing that right fucking now.

Feel better, dungeondelver?

Sacrosanct; you're absolutely right.

What's an internet post without excessive hyperbole, amirite*?

4e fans ruined my D&D experience about as much as Portland's 3000 gay marriages they gave out a few years ago ruined my hetero marriage.

That is, not at all.

God forbid.

It's funny--and by "funny," I mean "predictable"--how TCO comes in here and shits up the entire thread until it's focused around his stupidity.  Reminder for those not in the know about his "playtest":
QuoteI ran the playtest event at our local FLGS earlier today, and I came away with some thoughts:

1. The game we played today was a lot more random than I've become accustomed to from D&D, and this was not a good change. The whims of the dice seemed to matter more than the decisions we made.

2. Spamming "I swing a sword" or "Magic Missile" or "Radiant Lance" or whatever got old, really old, to the point where people started losing interest. We ran for about 6 hours, and some people got really burned out about halfway through due to the lack of choices on what to do on any given turn.  I got sick of spamming "I swing a sword" with all the monsters from my DM's chair. After over a decade of 4E and mid-high level 3E(particularly running 4E monsters), and over two decades of computer and console RPGs I find I really need more buttons to press, and I wasn't alone here. Stunting and "making stuff up" while nice is not a replacement, and neither was 2-3 spells per day. Given experience with 3E, level 5ish when Clerics and Wizards(specialist) had about 12 spells per day was the break point where daily resources became "enough", and after 4E I'm not looking kindly on the early levels being boring as dirt again.

3. Running things today brought back the vibe from my 2E days, but didn't add to it or make it special. If I wanted to play 2E, I'd be running 2E instead of 4E right now. 5E as currently presented doesn't offer me much more than 2E already does, and I'm not really looking to run or play 2E. 5E really didn't show me anything new or interesting.

No, it's corporate profiteering at the expense of the hobby.  However, Obama is a terrible president anyway.
Quote from: Black Vulmea;530561Y\'know, I\'ve learned something from this thread. Both B.T. and Koltar are idiots, but whereas B.T. possesses a malign intelligence, Koltar is just a drooling fuckwit.

So, that\'s something, I guess.

Understood. Still, I feel absolutely terrible about ruining the entire gaming industry.

Well no, I really don't. I've got no use for haters. I'm a contrarian from hell, and if playing a game I enjoy pisses off a bunch of haters, I consider that a bonus.

Ah. Error was between chair and table. TCO's group were given a near-infinite amount of "buttons" to press, but whined because they only wanted twelve.

I'm really tired of TCO's assumption that he gets to speak for all 4e players.  (I refuse to use the word fan - always remember that it's short for fanatic).

He's not even the only person on these boards who plays 4E.

The greatest immediate danger to our hobby is self-hate. The greatest long-term one is disinterest.

I don't see why the hobby needs D&D to be successful anyway, when the choice of game right now is massive, far bigger than its ever been. Getting hold of out of print stuff is reasonably easy, sometimes expensive, but more and more is turning up in PDF and print on demand or on kickstarter.

So some people want to hate D&D 5e before it's come out? That's their loss (I'm sure it'll play well and please a lot of people) but whilst D&D will remain the best known name in the RPG industry, it might not be the biggest game, which is partly a problem of its own making with the edition glut since 2000 or so 3e, 3.5e, 4e, essentials, next year 5e...
