yeah, good to nip that shit in the bud.

interesting point on name/brand loyalty--up until the mess with the old pdfs being withdrawn, i would've had some WotC loyalty.  after all, they were the current version of d&d at the time.  but that stunt killed any goodwill i had towards them or any of their products.

then 4e came out, my 3.x group was already done, and i saw no need to continue with the d&d "brand."

then the 5e (i also refuse to refer to it by the retarded "next") doc came out, and i realized the only d&d i need is the ones i already have.  that's where the loyalty lies, not in a name or company.

back OP/OT, mona's right, the GSL was deliberately designed (IIRC) to be stricter than the OGL.  i doubt anyone will be that hardcore enough to wrestle with the GSL and try to release their own 4e.

Meh. D&D4 evidently wasn't a failure for WotC, because we're getting a D&D5.

It just wasn't a big enough success. There's definitely some market there, even if it's not huge. Let the 4e fans make their own game, just like every other edition's fans did.

I wonder if it is possible that the GSL trumps the OGL. Yes, you could make a 4E clone using the OGL, but wouldn't the GSL overshadow it and allow for legal action to be taken against a publisher trying to do a 4E clone?

(I remember a conversation on the SJG forums when 4E first came out about the possibility of making a set of Munchkin 4E books and the idea was shot down by SJG due to the restrictive nature of the GSL).
"Meh."

Sacrosanct

You know, whenever I read threads like that, I do a huge eye roll.  Why?  Because it never fails to see a bunch of 4e fans say things like, "Now that WoTC has forsaken us to appease the 3.x and early crowd."

WTF?  Last time I checked, D&D Next was including things from every edition.  That includes 4e.  So no, 4e fans aren't being tossed to the side.  They are being treated like fans of every other edition.  Why does no one ever call them on their shit?
D&D is not an "everyone gets a ribbon" game.  If you\'re stupid, your PC will die.  If you\'re an asshole, your PC will die (probably from the other PCs).  If you\'re unlucky, your PC may die.  Point?  PC\'s die.  Get over it and roll up a new one.

Take a long hard look at the hardcore 4vengers.  There's a whole subset that hinges their like of D&D on 4e and not in the sense of "like it better than other editions" but "Didn't play D&D at all until 4 because 4 was the only D&D that got things right" (and then throw around phrases they don't really understand but like to use anyway like "objectively best" and so forth).  These are the entitled screechers who feel that any contamination of the ubergame by untergame elements (note: I have playtested 5e and there are no "1e elements" in it, period, so again they're being histrionic in a totally hilarious way) means that D&D ends, that it will die, that the hobby is not worth it, that people who've dared to bring these "old school" elements in should be bullied out of the hobby, etc.  This is literally what these people think.  Go read the 5e megathread at somethingawful (spoiler: the goons did it.  with their assholes.  in the parlor.) and the closely associated "grognards.txt" - I'm not lying.  Again, this is literally what these people think.

It was enough of a failure that they threw it out.

The "it won't generate enough sales" part?  That was kind of a zinger.

They were going to, eventually, anyway. Such is the nature of entertainment products.

But there will be another WotC D&D RPG. The brand is not being rested or killed. D&D4, financially, did well enough to keep the brand alive.

I would rather not wade through that, can someone summarize or provide the relevant bits?
