Title: 4E Unearthed Arcana
Post by: Benoist on September 02, 2010, 05:03:41 PM
Recycling cut or rejected game materials in electronic format. (http://www.wizards.com/DnD/Article.aspx?x=dnd/dred/2010September)

Interesting concept for an "Unearthed Arcana".

Sounds like an Unearthed "garbage dump".  :D

I'd suspect the particular columns to be a lot more "hit and miss" than usual. Of course, if they're consistently super cool, one would wonder why the fuck they are being consistently cut from WotC material, which would be... interesting to say the least.

I'm interested in how they implement guns.  Perhaps my borther's Eberron meets Pirates of the Caribbean game will finally get off the ground.

If they do weapons for guns, I would much rather see them treated as superior weapons (I know this isn't realistic, since guns are actually much easier to use than say, crossbows) or as alchemical items than just a collection of gun-themed "powers".

I do like the idea of an Unearthed Arcana monthly feature in the magazine...I thinkt hat this is a much better implementation than just publishing a 300 page book of wonky houserules.

And? I'm done bitching about 4E. It's become relevant to my gaming again because of Essentials.

>> none of what you'll read in Unearthed Arcana has been through our normal development cycle. It's all experimental, optional, and unofficial<<

Considering how hideously, abysmally, horribly awful their normal 'development' is, calling this a garbage dump is an insult to garbage dumps, which at least have some things there definitely proven useful at some point.

Well, maybe it's an opportunity in disguise. Who knows how much cool, out there content is cut not because it sucks, but because it doesn't fit some "balance" guideline, or some thematic component, or whatever else outside of the intrinsic value of the work itself?

I once threw a pile of 486/sx33's into a dumpster, which presumably went into a garbage dump.

This, by definition, means that garbage dumps have more utility in them than this.

LOL Yes. I'm cautiously optimistic. I look at it now as a completely different game, just like I would look at RM or Cadwallon, and wonder if it can add to the pannel of games I run. That's it. If it turns out it is just the same as the original 4e, well then, no big deal. I'll just move on. If it clicks to some degree with me, then I'll consider using it.

And let's not forget: the whole Mentzer mockup boxed set works both ways: if some might be picking up this new boxed set because of nostalgia or whatever, but somehow don't get what they're searching for, OS DMs can just bring back the Mentzer boxed set too. What I mean is that the more exposure this product has, the better it'll be for everyone involved, "new school", "old school", whoever's picked up by the marketing's going to find himself a niche in this hobby, sooner or later.

I have no idea what you have been smoking, but its psychedelic.

I'm a 4e fan and I don't see anything in the Essentials previews that tells me its any more of a change than 1e to 2e, 3e to 3.5 or 3.5 to Pathfinder.  Essentials is 4e with some tweaks.  Maybe some cool tweaks and some clean-ups, but nothing that even remotely resembles a real change (2e-3e, 3e-4e).

However, I hope you have great fun with it.

Nah, I didn't mean that I consider Essentials to be a completely different game from 4E.
I don't give a shit if it's 4.1, 4.PI, 4.5, 4.666... Really. I don't give a shit.

I mean that I look at 4e now as a completely different game than AD&D, for instance (bear in mind I was answering to TDD, here). There are specific elements of Heinsoo/original 4e that make gag, personally, and I just hope that Essentials involved enough twists to make me look at it from a different perspective.

Whether it's still "4e" or a "new edition" or whatever is none of my concern. Whether it works *for me* is all that matters to me at this point.

PS: And I'm certainly NOT talking of Essentials replacing AD&D or any other version of D&D at my game table. If anything, Essentials will ADD to the pannel of games I run. It will not "replace" anything.
