This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Star Wars Saga Edition: Campaign Notes

So me and another guy are running Star Wars Saga Edition, and here's the basic premise:

The game will take place just before Episode IV, when Vader is still the scourge of the known universe, and the threat of the Death Star is still large as life, and twice as bright as day light. It is unlikely we'll deal with the events covered in A New Hope, but anything is possible.

His group will consist of a number of Force sensitive, and even possibly Padawan Jedi-as they'll be at the far edge of the known universe, they've avoided Order 66 by simply being so far away, and so far out of the spot light as to almost not exist. Along with their NPC, an actual Jedi Knight who will accompany them at first, they will be escorting a noble woman through some of the outer rim planets. Mayhem and adventure ensue right?

Well my group will play Bounty Hunters who will actually be a group of undercover agents of the Empire, implanted into the underworld to do the Emperor's bidding in things he'd like kept secret or hidden from public view. They will all be first level, and there is the potential not all of them will be agents of the Empire. Their cover will be that they are a newly formed group of bounty hunters working as a team-but their real goal is that word of a Jedi Knight and his Padawan has reached the ears of someone at Imperial Intelligence. As such their unit has been formed and will be sent undercover to see if the rumors are true.

My group will take the results of his groups adventures as materials and data for their own adventures, as my group will attempt to track them down and perhaps eventually capture or kill them.

I'll keep you all updated on what we do,and why, and how it works. I am also looking for any tips you may have, insight or ideas-especially any one who may have a lead on a character generator. (Two of my players do much better with something like a character generator than by hand.)

Serious Paul

In  my group we have five potential players-as we're always losing one or two to scheduling we're generally seating four players, and myself at the table come supper time, and game time-and this is what they've loosely discussed playing:

  • One solid expression of interest in playing a droid, due to their modularity and of course lack of human frailty. This has also been considered as another players possible character.
  • One Sith Adept/Force Aware potential Sith
  • One Trandoshan Gun Guy/Big Bad Ass guy
Two other players have yet to express their ideas yet, but I have some suspicions as to what we'll get from them.

My group will be sponsored by Cabrool Numm, a crime lord who is now up to his ass in debt to the Empire after Jaba the Hutt nearly killed him. ( A slight change of events from continuity.)

His group will consist of:

  • Wookie Soldier (male)- brawler path
  • Gungun Jedi (male)- sentinel path
  • Noble Ithorian (female)- rich family path
  • Duros Scoundral (male)- spacefarer path
As you can the two groups will vary widely in some respects, especially in their outlooks.

I'd like to hear the results of the Actual Play, especially if you are going to use the Destiny rules as an option.
"Meh."

Nice Paul. I found some similarities with my SW campaign, although I play it just after execution of Order 66.

Do you have a campaign wiki on Obsidian? You should post your stuff there.

Serious Paul

I'd never heard of it, but I'll look into it!

King of Old School

This sounds like a great premise for a SW campaign, and I look forward to following it.  Thanks for sharing!

As promised updates:

So far we've played two adventures, both brief-just under two hours each. And unfortunately both were with a partial group.

Game One

Designed as test run only, to let the players get a feel for the combat system, and how to make a character. Three of the five players show up and generate characters. We end up with:

  • B4-77: A Droid Noble
  • Quall'as-A Quarren Scout
  • Quall'lude-A Quarren Scoundrel. (Yes, the humor int he name is not lost upon us.)
They start out on a nameless world in a nameless space port, being asked for identification by an Imperial Customs Agent, who is backed by three Stormtroopers packing heavy blaster pistols.

B4-77 attempts to work his Deception mojo, but is quickly shut down by the Imperial Agent who is clearly biased against droids. So faced with little choice, as they had no identification worth mentioning they stall to gain position. But the Stormtroopers are hip to this strategy and the fire fight starts.

After rolling initiative we start working our way through the first combat round. Play is quick, and brutal. Several misses on both sides scorch the landing pad, and nearby buildings, but since everyone is making good use of cover and concealment no one has taken a real hit yet.

It should be noted that B4-77 has no offensive capabilities what so ever. No weapons. No ability to grapple. Nothing. He can't even ram. His entire strategy is to distract a single Stormtrooper with out dying.

Finally the players score a hit on one of the other two stormtroopers, and manage to bring him down with a severe wound that pushes him far enough up the condition chart to render him unconscious.

They, the Quarren Brothers, tag team the remaining Stormtrooper by the launch pad-the third has sought cover by a building a short distance away-and they cut up the Customs Agent real fast-he has no armor to stop their viscous attacks. Quall'as then breaks to help B4-77, while Quall'lude decides he'll spend a few actions stabbing the Customs Agent in the face.

Quall'as and B4-77 manage to trip the remaining Stormtrooper and Quall'as beats him to death with his bare hands in a brutal, down and dirty fight that wounds him in the process.

This wraps up game one and our experimentation with the combat system.

Second Game

Second session of Agents of the Empire was held. Only two players in attendance.

B4-77, a droid noble, and Voren Lack (Created on the spot by the fourth player of our group of five.), a Kel-Dorian Soldier, are brought together in a small seedy bar in Kee Piru, a space port on Mon Cal.

The Crime Lord Cabrool Numm has tasked them with locating a Quarren by the name of Odan-Ur, and his ship the Storms Claw, which is a modified Gymsnor-3. Their Twi'lek contact explains that he will be arriving on the landing pad just down the way from the bar in six hours. He also explains that Cabrool wants a clear message delivered, and Odan-Ur killed.

The PC's agree, and set up surveillance of the landing pad. Having made sure they have com contact prior to this they approach the ship as it lands. B4-77 uses his deception skill to bluff his way aboard the ship, claiming he and Voren were here on Cabrool Numm's behalf to work out a deal.

The following conversation is cleverly laid out by B4-77, while Voren tries to surreptitiously get a better position, which the Quarren catches and with his blaster drawn he is getting ready to start shooting when the PC's beat him to the punch. Unarmed B4-77 flees for the cock pit trying to make sure he gets there before the Quarren. Voren and the Quarren end up trading blaster shots, and the Quarren scores a critical hit with a natural 20. Judiciously Voren spends a force point avoiding death, after taking 40 points of damage. He is now unconscious and dying.

B4-77 reaches the cockpit and jacks in to the ships computers, sealing all the doors. The Quarren, who has no computer skills is going to try and blast his way into the cock pit. But this will take a long time. In the meantime B4-77 lifts off, and opens the rear hatch, sky rocketing straight up.

Luckily for Voren Lacks the spice cargo on the repulsor lifts pin him to the wall, leaving only his blaster hand free to move. He spends another force point, and makes a lucky fortitude check and regains consciousness. While Odan-Ur hangs on for life and limb Voren shoots him in the back, and scores a killing blow.

As Odan-Ur's lifeless body falls out of the ship into the atmosphere, B4-77 seals the rear hatch and levels off the ship.

The players now have a ship!

Serious Paul

The next game will see the players trying to pick up the two Quarren from the surface of Mon Cal, and dealing with some of the consequences of stealing a star ship and murdering four Imperials-so far.

In the process of stealing the Storms Claw they also stood up the Quarren's contact, whom he was trading spice for computer parts to resell off planet. The contact now has a bunch of really stolen computer parts, no real good place to hide them and no one to transport them.

So they already have a few pissed off parties looking for them. They will also get word on the group being run by the other game master, and they'll begin tracking them.

Also one of their numbers may be an Agent of the Empire. So fun to be had!

Serious Paul

1st Updates from the guy running the other group:

QuoteThe party centers around an Ithorian noble Trangle. She comes from a moderately prominent family. Never content to sit at home and trifle herself with the typical royal obligations, Trangle has convinced her parents to let her travel the trade routes of the galaxy on various diplomatic missions. What this really means is that she transports goods to an from her home world for her parents and spends a few weeks too many on each planet partying and having fun.

Her parents have given her a moderate cargo vessel to do this in and a small protective group to watch over her. The protectors include Rorworr, a Wookie Soldier; a Duros Scoundrel/Spacehound who pilots the ship; a mid-level human Jedi named Caleb (an NPC) and his apprentice, a Gungan jedi.

They're first stop is at Cloud City in Bespin to pick up some ore to take back to Trangle's parents' estate. They marvel at the wonders of cloud city and argue with the old man in the hanger over the paperwork for the goods they are picking up. Caleb (the elder jedi) is told by Trangle to scout the immediate area for security and entertainment for the evening. He agrees and leaves. After twenty minutes of arguing with the old man over the papers, the entire group is loitering in the cargo hold when an emergency communication comes in for the group. It's Caleb at a public communicator, he's shouting at them to seal the ship and immediately leave Bespin-- "Seal it! Get out! Get out!" Then over the communicator (which is visual) they see him get tackled by a swarm of storm troopers.

The shit hits the fan.

The old man starts getting confused and yelling and wants the papers. Trangle doesn't know what to do and the wookie and duros are looking to her for orders. The Gungan jedi knows exactly what to do and starts barking orders. He yells at the wookie to hit the emergency seals and close up the ship. He yells at the Duros to run to the front and get them the "heck" out of there. He tells Trangle to run to safety.

TOO LATE! The old man grabs the papers from Trangle and starts running down the loading ramp. The wookie smacks the emergency seals and the ramp starts closing as the old man starts running out. The duros is gone, already going to the cockpit. Before the communication with Caleb is ended, he pops back up and shouts to the Gungan Jedi, "Go to [edited out until I talk with Paul.]!" Then he's stunned with a giant floor length stunner baton and hauled off by storm troopers. They can hear a stormtro0per say, "This is only the master. Vader wanted us to secure the apprentice too. Trace that communication!" And then it ends.

As the doors are closing to the cargo hold, six storm troopers are running up and trying to jump in. Three make it in while a fourth gets crushed in the doors. The jedi pulls out his light saber, everyone grabs their blasters and it is on.

As the battle starts, the Duros gets the ship geared up and sees the blaster doors closing on the hangar they are in. Knowing what he has to do, he makes a kick ass pilot check, slams it into fiftieth gear and hauls ass out of there before the blast doors close. The jolt of the ship knocks over all the people in the cargo hold except the jedi and the noble.

Much blasting and lightsabering ensues and they subdue the stormtroopers, who apparently are killed by a device in their armor after they are knocked unconscious.

They speed off into space, strangely not being followed by any other ships.

End of first session.

Serious Paul

I believe both groups play this weekend, so there will be an update on both parties then. Just as a side note, we're coordinating this via email and phpBB-as we live on opposite ends of the country. So it's cool that so far things are working.

If and when my players catch up to his group, their eventual goal, we've discussed playing via team speak, or even conference call. We're not sure how we'll handle that yet.

Game Three:

So B4-77, Quall'as and the newly renamed Garan (Used to be Quall'lude!) meet with Cabrool Numm, and discuss the fate of the Storm's Claw.

After settling that Cabrool briefs them on their next target: An Ithorian scientist who works under Imperial supervision in a botanical station on Mon Cal. Her name is Jem Greeta, and she is working on a bacta supplement and a organic fuel cell alternative.

Her work has been pretty average over the years, radically slanted towards environmentalism but of little real significance. She has made a career out of demonstrating how a person can live harmoniously with the environment, even in hostile climates and environments.

Numm wants the PC's to steal her research data and transport it to Bespin, where he'll be reselling it. He is less concerned about whether she lives or not than he is about actually getting the data. He has significant resources on Mon Cal so he is  able to tell the PC's up front that the botanical station is on a small privately owned artificial island, and only has a small Imperial presence.

A single squad of Stormtroopers under the supervision of Lt. Jaran Taa is responsible for keeping the small island secure. They are armed, but they don't have any trans-atmospheric crafts on station. There is a fifty kilometer no fly zone, but it is enforced more by the implied presence of the empire and less by actual patrols.

The PC's quibble over payment, and ask surprisingly few questions. Surprisingly they don't ask for money upfront. (Something they later regretted.)

After a little shopping B4-77 now has a tool arm, and a weapon, as well as a small shield generator. (I need to look that over, as we only briefly discussed it so we could keep the game moving, and not stall it on purchasing and rules.) While 3278 handled that Estes and Atem, our two Quarren, did some holo-net research on the station, only looking for publicly available data and not trying to pry.

They are able to discover that the facility is monitored by the Mon Cal weather satellite system, which they can tap into for real time footage. They decide to spend a day surveilling the facility. Finally after settling on a plan they murder a  small vehicle salesman and steal two underwater sleds, and a submersible vehicle for B4-77.

Setting out towards the facility they make some good rolls on a perception test, and manage to skirt the one "semi" random encounter I had planned for them. (A large sea monster that was aggressive, but two of them rolled natural 20's on their perception tests. So they were able to skirt it completely.)

Since the beginning of the game it has been raining and storming, and this serves as cover for their infiltration. The Quarren's ascend a domed structure in which they've identified the primary and secondary communication arrays while B4-77 locates a nice surprise: a vectored thrust used by the storm troopers to provide security and transportation. It has two repeating blaster canons mounted on it and twelve missiles. (Sort of the Huey for the Empire!) Deciding this is worth the detour he makes an amazingly lucky mechanics roll twice in a row-it was 32's night for natural twenties man. Bypassing the security devices he boards the craft and assumes control of it, tapping into the Stormtroopers battle net immediately.

As the Quarrens cut the communications the Stormtroopers on patrol stop, and begin walking towards the comm array-storms knock it all the time, so this is pretty SOP. The Quarrens cross from the dome they are on tot he living quarters dome, and find the good Ithorian's personal quarters. Surprisingly there is Lt. Tass blaster drawn arguing with the Jem Greeta, who is reaching for a butcher's knife on her counter.

The Quarrens have no choice but to blast their way in, and drop through the ceiling. As they do so the Stormtroopers report blaster fire, and begin  to investigate. B4-77 starts the VT up, using the storm as cover to fire it up.

The Quarrens blast it out at point blank range with Lt. Taa, killing him, but also Jem Greeta and seriously wounding Garan[/i] in the process. (He had to spend a force point, or two in the process.) before he dies Lt. Taa is able to send a distress signal. The players hear Greeta mouth one word over and over again "Trangle" before she dies.

The stormtroopers on the roof are making their way down, when the rest pour out of the building they're in-except their Sargent, a crafty stormtrooper by the name of TK-622, who is heading for the armory, and the craft B4-77 has already commandeered.

B4-77 sees the stormtroopers coming down so lifts off. Seeing the others coming out of the building he opens fire with the repeating blaster canons, making short work of them. The Quarren's snag everything they can: her personal computer, data-pads, journals, jewelry, and pretty much anything they can carry. They also remove both her eyes, a finger, a thumb, her tongue and some skin. (In their words: "Just in case.")

At this point TK-622 disables the VT craft that B4-77 is piloting with a rocket hit to the engines. B4-77 tries to crush him with the craft but TK-622 is able to blast his way into a underground tunnel.

At this point the game had to end, as I got an emergency phone call-so we'll pick up later.
