This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

4e off for a second printing already

Quote from: SeanchaiI agree to a point, but you generally don't compare release 3 to release 1, you compare it to release 2. And 3.5 was release 2.

Seanchai

Seanchai pretty much nails it. From Wizards' POV, they are comparing their newest product to the one before it.

EDIT: Still, it would be nice to have some actual numbers...

Quote from: RPGPunditYes, the print run to compare it to would be 3.0's.

Anyways, I don't think anyone seriously expected the game not to have high initial sales. I always did.

The real question is how it'll be doing in a year.

Per Mearls, as far as print runs go...

4.0 > 3.5 > 3.0

Mcrow

I estimate that they have sold about 25k to 30k copies of the gift set so far. This going off of the engrams numbers and assuming they only account for roughly 10-15% of the sale for WotC typically.

I wonder if the guy who sends out the proof this time will remember that he can skip step 2...

Step 1: Create final pdf for print.
Step 2: "Leak" as part of viral marketing campaign.
Step 3: Send to printer.

Its too early to tell, honestly, how the game will be doing in a year's time.

For Wizards to really consider 4e a success, it has to reach a new level of magnitude beyond anything 3.x (.0 OR .5) ever achieved.  For that to happen, the central factor will be D&D Insider.  If D&D Insider takes off, then the new edition will be a huge success, if not...

They've already badly fumbled the ball on that.  The ads in the new books tell you to go to dndinsider.com for all the cool new stuff but that url is still pointing to the wotc/dnd site.  It should have been ready to go when the game launched.

The game doesn't actually launch until June.

Quote from: CalithenaI am having this vague sense that somehow WotC may have actually reached a wider audience.

It may be Gary's death, which was a worldwide event, and which made the folks who didn't come back for 3e remember D&D just before the release.

Let's pray the game rewards the interest, for the sake of our hobby.

the PHB is actually dedicated to Gygax.

That is sweet of them.

I know.

Consonant Dude, I don't know why, but I have a feeling that 4e is going to be a success too, regardless of the D&D Insider content. The ritual magic also gave me hope that it may actually be a good RPG (relative to my standards). But, first the minis battles, if combat isn't fun the rest doesn't matter, at least to me. Even though a lot of my games involve mostly talking. Well, so I'm a pervert, sue me.

Anyway, as I've said before my standard of success for an RPG is total number of butts in seats playing RPGs per minute. And that's what I have hope 4e may do.

Do you really think it will be ready on launch day?  If you do, I have some nice swamp land in florida that might interest you.

I knew it would sell, and after a few previews, I also knew it would suck :D

I don't think D&D insider has anything to do with 4e's success or lack thereof. Or rather, I think DDI can only help.  Every other edition of D&D has managed to be successful without an online component. D&D insider is extra revenue if it works out, if not it just a failed support service, which is a vastly difference from having a failed game.
