Title: 4e dark sun?
Post by: RPGPundit on August 11, 2010, 01:50:15 AM
So, what's it like? Did they fuck it up?
Does it make the same mistake FR did, where they have to have every single playable race under the sun, every power and ability, etc.? And in particular did they feel the need to put things like tieflings, warforged, dragonborn, etc in prominent roles?

Or did they actually do good with it?

They promised some changes to combat.  I'm interested in hearing about what they did with the ruleset.

From what little I've read...they got the theme almost dead perfect. Sure, there is some 4Eisms at work, but it feels like Dark Sun. I think 4E is more suited to the harsh setting than any previous editions.

I know a lot of people say 4E was written with Eberron in mind, but I'll debate that it was written so it could support Dark Sun's theme better.

Was this really case, or just a coincidence?

6 one way, half a dozen the other. Eberron really supported the 4E mindset of play. At the same time a lot of 4E's development was influenced by what Eberron brought to the table in the 3.5 era.

4e is certainly more well suited to some of the high ability gonzo that Dark Sun originally offered.

said it before and I'll say it again: 4e is very well suited to Gamma World.

Each to their own I guess. I've only played D&D 4e a few times, but it's still a pretty crunchy game with hour long combats. It's hard to do wild and wahoo with hoir long combat scenes.

I like my Gamma World fast and light, roll and go. If anything Savage Worlds would probably fit nicely.

Were the Defiling rules ever fixed? The pre-release material, followed strictly, allowed you to completely ignore the damage your party was suppose to suffer, and the trick didn't even require any special build or item.

Darksun would appear to be a good fit mechanically.

In both cases it works the illusion your character is overpowered whilst quite the opposite is true.

I have the original set, and I cannot wait to get a hold of this version.
