This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Isn't there website out there that allows you to make your own Traveller-esque cover?  I know I had it, but can't find it in my bookmarks.

Gah!  Thanks--I couldn't find it in my Trav links, and was getting frustrated.

Its one of my favorites.

Too bad it can't be used for Mongoose Traveller OGL (it is considered "trade dress" for the books).
"Meh."

I don't know much about how MongTrav's OGL works, Jeff. What do you mean by it being considered trade dress? (I mean, I know what the general definition of trade dress is, but not sure how it applies here)

Quote from: Mongoose Traveller OGL14.   Front covers are not permitted to mimic the trade dress of the old style 'classic' Traveller books, or the new core Traveller books.  Specifically, any resemblance to a monotone cover with coloured text is expressly prohibited (in other words, create your own identity, do not attempt to make your books look like the official Mongoose line).

Now, I can understand that since Mongoose was the publisher who went to the trouble of getting the license from Marc Miller in the first place. How it applies is that a 3PP cannot use the same minimalist cover style that the Classic Traveller or Mongoose Traveller books use to help sell the 3PP books.

The cool thing about Berka's LBB cover generator is that if you look at the copyright symbol, its a smiley face - showing that this is for personal amusement only and not publication. IIRC.

Now, having gone over the Mongoose OGL for their iteration of Traveller in some detail, point #14 there applies to the use of the minimalist design scheme when publishing a product that makes use of their OGL.  If you're just playing around for fun, you could mock up whatever you want in PhotoShop or what-have-you.  And if you're publishing a Traveller-esque game or supplement using a different set of game mechanics, then you could also do as you will.  Their restriction in cover design applies only to products using their game license.

I thought that was obvious.

Nothing is obvious, this is the internet, where people argue that the world is flat, not warming, children should be able to consent to sex with fat old men, resources will last forever and we can get oil from Titan, and that people who like mayo on their sandwiches are just like the Nazis.

Everything must be spelled out.

So, the fact that something that was just for fun, like the zho.berka.com cover-maker, should be okay somehow flew under your radar?

And Kyle.  Fuck yourself. :)

That was not obvious, so it did have to be said, thankyou.

Now you lazy prick, speaking of Traveller ripoffs, what's happening to Mariner? Am I going to have to tidy up SixLetterSystem and write the fucking thing myself?!

Yes, because if you look at my earlier post, you will find that I was lamenting that you couldn't use it with Mongoose Traveller OGL (something that you might publish for that system) and not that you couldn't use it at all.

No, no.  Not lazy prick; busy prick.  As in, too busy with other things.  And I'll confess that, after waiting out the playtest for Mongoose's Traveller, and my sense of deflation upon seeing the final result and terms of the OGL, I wound up rather discouraged with the project.  However, I'm back to my original backup plan and just about ready to put Book 1 out there to have scores of disinterested fans poke holes in my transparent attempt to recapture someone else's lightning in a bottle.  Oh, and I'm ironing out rules for 1/600th scale boat minis for Book 2, or whatever I end up calling it.

To be honest, I've been half-suspecting that you're already up to somesuch thing. ;) Maybe the sense of competition will be good for me.

And, to swing this post somewhat back on-topic, here's a little fun with how I felt once the great playtest was over:
