This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

I´m for Jeff, the Colonel or Caesar Slaad.
I´m also for Abyssal Maw.

Personally, I'd rather not be a judge. It's a lot of work. I just wanted to mention that a couple of us have done it. Why? Eh. An ego thing, I guess.

4e definitely has an Old School feel. If you disagree, cool. I won\'t throw any hyperbole out to prove the point.

I think it would be cool to nominate someone here as an Ennie judge, but it sounds like to do a good job could take some work and time.

I'm all for Jeff or Mike to represent our POVs, but they should be up for the task too.

I'm still deciding if I want to throw my hat in the ring this year.

It is a lot of work, and they are getting a late start (I was a judge in a year like this before).

I expect this year will have a lot bigger representation of non-d20, as this was a slow year for third party d20 and we have yet to get WotC to participate.

If you have an appreciation of both the d20 and non-d20 field and can fairly judge both, have lots of free time to give, and can make a case to the interested gaming audience that you are a good choice, then I encourage you to throw your hat in the ring.

It's a mountain of stuff to read and evaluate in a really short amount of time. There are too many publishers who dither and wait until the last second to enter (at least there were when I was a judge) and getting the material to all the judges can take a lot of time too.

The person who becomes the point of contact for the publishers to send their entries has the most work, and it can be a thankless task. This is the guy who receives all the stuff and then sends it to all the other judges. Dealing with just the regular postal system can be a pain in the ass, but if you have to ship internationally...<> I was still receiving bills for various charges for the stuff I had to ship to Canada a year later.

Then, when you have all the stuff, just getting the time to go through it all to give everyone a fair shake is tough. I know Teflon Billy, the only ENnies judge for every year there has been an ENnies, takes something like a week off work to do it, which is something I did also, and believe me, it's still tough to get it all read, working it like a job with 12 hour days.

It ain't all shits and giggles and free swag, which way too many people seem to think. Then ya gotta deal with all the conspiracy theorists and detractors in general after the nominations are made. I've seen the ENnies judges accused of everything from being shills to sell-outs to liars to incompetents.

In the end, I quit throwing my hat into the ring because the bullshit began to eclipse the fact that I got a lot of books. But that's just me.

Only because ENWorld makes ridiculous expectations of Wizards, and Wizards (correctly) realizes that its participation would be nothing more than a kangaroo court where the Swine rig the awards to try to piss all over WoTC's product.

I mean really, fuck the ENNies have become a total joke at this point.

I became disillusioned somewhat last year when Green Ronin won approximately 412 times and Nicole Lindroos had the goddamn Black-Eyed Peas song "Pump It" play every time they won.

Also, the guy I was next to predicted every single freakin' winner before they were announced except one.  Showoff.

The best part were the Shadowrun guys teasing after winning and saying "d20 gives you cancer" and having three people giggle nervously and the rest of the place turn downright icy.

This reflects a total absence of knowledge of the market and the awards.

The persistent and rightful fear is that wizards would sweep any awards which they participated, simply due to the fact that they have the largest market presence.

QuoteMany of them are all of the above.

Name one, and tell me how you came to that conclusion.

I have the sense you are talking out your ass.

But thanks for reminding me about the petulant whining and second guessing that is the "down side" of the awards before I made the decision to get involved again.

Yeah, because fanboy wankery from the podium should receive a warm reception.

We're not talking about fanboys, but the guys who actually created a game up at the podium.  It was a joke, and pretty clearly not one that was appreciated.  I heard people grumbling about it still as I was walking out.

I'll tell you one thing--I felt Rich Burlew was a very funny guy.  Keith Baker came off as sort of a yutz, which was a shame.

They would deserve to. But the reality of the judging and voting process, especially as every year it is more and more infiltrated by Swine from the Forge, is that if Wizards was a nominee it would just be an opportunity for the Swine to make sure its products "lost".

QuoteName one, and tell me how you came to that conclusion.

I'm trying to find the blog entry I wrote about it, last year I believe, of the case of the one judge who hadn't actually received all of the sample product he was supposed to before he made his selections, but was allowed to vote anyways. The guy went very public with complaints about it, springing the whole thing out into the open.
