I found out about this last year, and going through the contest helped me in a lot of ways as a game designer and writer.

I just submitted a game today in which players are dragons trying to outlive one another. Hopefully it is successful!
Last year I created a RPG about players being simple villagers trying to defend their homestead, and a supplement for A Red & Pleasant Land to randomly generate encounters using a deck of cards (because Alice).
Anyone else participate in this?
I wouldn't even know where to begin making a game of my own, much less in 200 words.
Good luck with your entry!

Thanks!
I found it really hard to keep the rules and concept concise while offering enough complexity of play to be interesting.
Ever so often BGG/RPGG hosts something like that too. Sometimes things like a one-page adventure shows up as well. The folks from Gumshoe hosted one last year.
And this one offsite.

3 days for 200 words. And I go back to work tomorrow night.
hmmmm
Thanks for this. I put in two 'games' one is about being stranded on an alien planet. The other is about trying to negotiate a peice treaty half way through a game of Go.
I am kind of proud of that one. But damn 200 words is a tight limit. Good luck.
I mean, more power to you if you're into this, but I find it kind of silly.

Sillier than pretending to be an elf prince seeking orc gold and the throne of Fantasyland?

I find it to be a worthwhile exercise. It's quite challenging IMO.

Well yes, trying to do that with 200 words is sillier than doing it with as many words as are actually appropriate.

Thus the contest. Might as well say "run a hundred yards in however long it takes" but still call it a race.
And the part where they they have 700 entries. So there is no way they are judging all of those if the game is as long as the author thinks it needs to be.

Well, you could start by tossing out every entry that failed to adhere to the rules! :D
How did you do Nilistic? I didn't get any where. It would have been nice for some judging guidlines. It seemed to be coming from a theatre games background instead of a war games background.
It also seemed to be mildly biased against fun. But that might be sour grapes.

Hey Headless, I wasn't thrilled with some of the entries that won, but those types of contests are very biased toward what the judges are into so I'm not going to read into it.
I'm happy with my entry this year, to the point where I'm thinking of rewriting it without a word limit and just generally try to make it fit on one sheet of paper (hopefully one-sided, we'll see). I think it's best to get feedback from the community, if anything. I'll post my entry in the Design section of this forum if you'd like to take a look and provide feedback. I suggest you share your game as well in that section to receive feedback.
Speaking of feedback, this guy here: http://roleplaygreenroom.blogspot.com.au/ has committed to giving a review of every game entry. I haven't watched his video yet but I'll get to it eventually. :)
