We are rapidly approaching the Day of the Beast, 6/6/6!  In honour of this momentous (okay, unimportant but numerologically interesting) day, Nutkinland is going to have a contest to make the most interesting demon or devil!

Don't feel tied to d20.  Use whatever system you like.  Hell, if you want to create a demon without game stats, go for it.  The important part is to create a cool, badass, and/or unique servant of evil.  I'd also be happy to see art entries -- they'd be on equal standing with descriptions.

Post your spirit of evil by 06/05/06 and I will announce the winner the next day.  Since this operation is non-profit (oh, is it ever non-profit :melodramatic: ) the prize package will be a virtual one.  I still have to talk to Pooka about the specifics, but it will include a 150 by 150 avatar.

I wonder if it is a coincidence that the day of the Beast occurs on the same day as the Swedish national day? :brood:

Knightcrawler

Does it matter if we use a demon/devil with a basis in real world mythology?  Of course those could be far and few.

Don't know about cool or badass...but here's one I have used  before :)

Name/Aka :Unknown /The Demon of Small Things

DoST is a wretched specimen of demonhood. His power  goes unoticed. He is the bump on the ground that other demons trip on, on their way to important meetings. He is not even one of the demons that gets scraps of plans that get thrown of the table to lesser demons. He is the one that gets the scraps of the scraps.

He is the demon of slip ups. The jammed gun. The sword that flies from the grasp by accident. The fart thats erupts when the mighty adventures are waiting to spring their final trap. He is the master of the misspoken quip...the spoiler of coolness.

He longs for greatness. He longs to be the angst that descends upon a tyrant who finally sits upon the throne...not the itch of a crown too tight. He craves to move up the chain...to be finally  the fly in the ointment...not the frustration of  opening the jar...that is why he is known as the Demon of Small Things.

His power is inconvenience. The power to disrupt albeit briefly the workings of greater and more powerfull beings. His power is the brief ridicule that follows. The unpleasent after taste of a cool/important moment halted briefly.

He appears in all worlds, in all times. In contemporary settings he appears as man dressed in once fine suits soiled and dirty (think Dustin Hoffman in Midnight Cowboy-"can't you see I'm walking here."). The clothes are such because they are hand me downs from other demons. In fantasy settings he appears much the same way...fine clothes now ratty...(but picture Steve Buscemi...well normally)

Once long ago, the great dark drunkenly told him THE SECRET. But the problem is , he(DoST) forget what it was. He spends his time endlessly creating mischief in various worlds trying to discover what this secret is, because he knows if he finds it....HIS TIME WILL COME.

David R

I'm not picky.  It'd be cool to see one based on actual mythology, or on the beasts from Revelations, but anything demonic is cool.

You could even have an ice demon that embodies everything that is evil in Sweden.  It would be incredibly polite, though.  ;)

We have our first entrant!  He's the opposite of cool and badass, but that's just fine.  He's cool in his uncoolness.  :heh:

My players read about old DoST. They would like me to post about the "motherfuckin'whore" demon that ended their quest for immortality in the last AD&D 2ed campaign they played in. Is posting twice allowed ?:D

Sure, as long as you get your players to post here, too.  :win:

(Assuming they don't already, that is.)

Okay, my last post in this thread, I promise :)

Name/AKA : Sharas the Young/The First Assassin/ The Dark Angel of Song

The Abyss has many secrets. Sharas the Young is one of it's most well guarded and dangerous. Those who know of Sharas never speak his/her name...for either fear that Sharas's interest may be aroused or that others would discover this most secret of weapons in the numerous blood fueds that go on in Hell.

Truth be told even those who know of Sharas(and there are only a few) do not really know the origins of this most enigmatic of demons. It is said that some demon princess know the truth but their lips are sealed as are anyones  who have have discovered the truth. Amongst those who know (or think they know) this legend has been passed around in dinner tables accompanied by the pleasent screams of a tortured souls.

It is said that Sharas was the first human assassin. The first who profitted from murder. The first who saw gain in death. Male or female...who can tell with humans. All that is known is that Sharas was the first. A long and glorious life of profit and murder...then he/she fell to us the darkest lowest, most depraved (even for us, old chap) pitt of hell. There to rot in painful pleasure (ours) for all eternity.

But then a strange thing happened. Even for a place like this. This human started to fight, bite, claw, crawl his/her way out of the depths of torment. From the bottom of hell there could be heard screams...and it was ours. Tales spread like the stink of an angels wings of a new player in town. One who bartered skill with death in return for solitude. Pacts were made with this upstart...or more often, the bloated bodies of our behethren were found ....they had suffered slowly before death(Some people get all the luck)

Suddenly Sharas vanished...whisked away by the Bosses. That's right...they came to him/her. Now some say he/she works for some of them...or at least he/she does not kill some of them...most of the time.

Imagine a vast chamber. Just a chamber. Nothing else. This is Sharas domain. There is a huge ornate mirror hanging on at one end of the chamber and a throne made of the corpse of some forgotten demon prince. On this sits Sharas. Brooding most of the time. Staring at the mirror - his/her only view of mortal worlds - or other times watching a succession of performances - human beings playing out their last mortal moments...the sound of broken necks, slashed flesh, the gurgling sound of the last breath from failing bodies. Music to Sharas's ears. The only other item of note...a machete...bone white blade with swiggly boold red veins running across it's length. It's handle the maw of some alien creature plusating with malicous life.

Sharas. All of six foot. His/her body wrapped up in cloth and bands of steel. The cloth and steel are old. A mummified walking corpse. Strange runes cover the cloth and steel. Glowing a bright sinister yellow/gold. These are the numerous contracts, enchantments, pacts that Sharas has made in order to be left alone. His/her whole body is riddled with these. Till the end of time these bind him/her.

He/she can only leave this chamber when on an errand for his/her benefactors. He/she can only visit the mortal plains when instructed/allowed to do so. So he/she waits and watches. The only companions are the souls that he/she has trapped in his/her machete. The fools who thought to challenge him/her. Their skills and powers now his. They whisper in his/her ears. Plot and seduce.

When he/she appears on the mortal plain he/she takes the form of a large ebony skinned man(Think Delroy Lindo). Some in hell have commented on this. Some remember the form as that of a noble king. Noone knows why Sharas assumes this form. He/she never speaks...he/she leaves that to a group of feral children that always seem to hang around him. They speak for him/her.

Sharas loves music and thus bards. He/she is obsessed with them. He/she had been known to make pacts with bards ...what they give him/her in return is unknown...but what they get is fame and then an extremely tragic end.
He/she spends most of his time on mortal plains discovering what is the latest music being played.

I don't have the stats for Sharas but I do remember a few things.

Before going into to battle, he/she has the ability to choose the most advantages terrain for him/her. This manifested in bonuses in attack and defence rolls.
Any song based/enchantment/bard magic does not affect him. Also before battle the players have to save vs something or fight as if five levels below their current level. This was cumalitive with the minus one level drain everytime Sharas was successful in scoring a hit. Bards were not afected by this.

His breath functioned like white/green dragons breath. His/her gaze could cause fear I think. His Machete was an artifact...I do remember that the blade caused continuing damage after a successful hit amongst other abilities. He was a high level thief/fighter with potent magic gained from centuries off studies under various demon tutors.

The only time he/she appears on mortal lands is when he is on an errand for his benefactors. He/she does not get involved with demon politics and it would seem is only interested in the music mortal create.

That's it.

David R.

So was my mother.  She'll be 76 this years.  Do you think "Betty" is a good name for a demon? :ponder:
