This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

WoW! Spam!

I'm getting lots of spam (presumably, that's the safe assumption) claiming to be from Blizzard regarding WoW. The latest was an invitation to the Cataclysm beta (which i had assumed was over since it's supposed to be out next month iirc). The details are so real though, it's quite frightening. The addresses and the links all seem so genuine - all apparently to Blizzard addresses, as opposed to thefakebankofnigeria@bullshit.comor something.

I doubt my machine could run cataclysm (though i can't find the specs anywhere), and I'm so tempted to test if this is a real address, but....

That's why I quit playing WoW a long time ago, and gave my account to my little bro.  I still get the spam though - if you look at the links in the email, you can tell they are fake because they are always some shit like

www.blizard.akount.reg/idtaking.&$^)%)(@&^!&/stuff

They are disguised as links in the email, hoping you'll just click on them without looking.  You can tell the real ones from the fake ones however, if you've ever had correspondence from Blizzard.

This is how your account gets stolen, I've had to deal with it without even clicking on one of those links.  If you're getting emails, it means the scammers already have your login for WoW and just need the password.

You can also tell which emails are fake, because the spelling and grammar is freaking atrocious.  Presumably because the scammers don't speak-a-d-Engrish.

Well that's the thing. The email links I get aren't like that. It's all stuff like noreply@blizzard. I assume it's spam because it's the safer option, but the addresses are legit. Usually it's just the usual 'click this link (again with a legit sounding addy) because your account has been hacked'. I haven't played in months and that account didn't have anything worth hacking, including a credit card (i used a prepaid code and never extended the play time).

Do you mean the addresses appearing in the email? Hover over these "addresses" without clicking in most email readers and you'll get the actual addresses they link to displayed just above the Start bar. They are not necessarily the same thing.

I got my e'mail hacked by clicking on one of those Blizzard e'mail links.
My WOW account (turned off at the moment) wasn't effected but the thing used my mail address to send out buttloads of spam to other folks.
It did look just like the legit mail I'd gotten from Blizzard in the past.
Now I just avoid clicking on e'mail links...

If so, it's fake.

I don't remember the specific wording, i've long since deleted it. I assumed it was fake on the basis of it being a bit late for a beta invite. Cataclysm is supposed to be out this month isn't it?

arent the blizzard emails usually html based with pictures and stuff? thats a good way to tell if its a fake aswell, well that and the fact the beta closed awhile back and the expansion is due early december and im pretty sure they didnt pick random players to beta test but asked them to apply on the site or something.

"People ask the question... what\'s a RocknRolla? And I tell \'em - it\'s not about drums, drugs, and hospital drips, oh no. There\'s more there than that, my friend. We all like a bit of the good life - some the money, some the drugs, others the sex game, the glamour, or the fame. But a RocknRolla, oh, he\'s different. Why? Because a real RocknRolla wants the fucking lot" -Archy (RocknRolla)
