As a child of the 70's whose poor brain was malformed by the plethora of action flicks from the 80's and 90's, I like games where I blow things up, shoot things, and race around on a vehicle looking for ways to do points #1 and #2.

That's about it.

I'm deep like a  petri dish, yo.

Civilization IV (and soon V).

This is my current favorite, though I really would like to see a new version of Starflight, and I still fire up Nethack every now and again...

For awhile I really liked Eve Online as well, but the "Kill them and take their stuff" exclusive focus over other aspects of sci-fi and the click-fest farming / resource gathering methods (Which only got worse over time) resulted in me dropping the game.

Lately I've been playing some older games I missed the first go round... and replaying old favorites.
Deus Ex still stands as one of the greats, I've gone through it three times now and I will probably play it again.
The 1st three Silent Hill games were pretty great, and damn scary.
MediEvil is another great console game that has a lot of variety and good design.

A new/old favorite is the No One Lives Forever series... FPS spoofs of old 60's spy movies like Modesty Blaise and Our Man Flint (which were pretty spoofy themselves).
Also Ico and Shadow Of The Collosus... very atmospheric action/puzzle games.

Civilization 2 is still the greatest game ever made.

Oblivion is the best fantasy RPG I have played (with a couple of mods).

Puzzle Quest seems to be one of my favorite games seeing as I have it on DS, 360 and now iPad.  The sequels have all had their strong and week points but I always end up going back to the original.

Borderlands definitely one of my favorite games more recently 3 play-throughs and still finding it fun.

Oblivion definitely one of the best Fantasy RPG's of any generation though I've found I've tired of it now but that's over probably 150+ hrs of play.

Fallout is equal to Oblivion but slightly more polished in the story and general play.  Still a good game and the expansions extend it.  But after awhile (100+hrs) it's also lost it's charm.  Now I pass it up for the more crack like ADD experience that Borderlands offers - all the fun, less of the tedium.

Etrian Odyssey III for the DS.  Fantastic series all the way around but the III is just so much better then the last two pretty much every aspect.  I don't know how many hours I've spent chilling with this game.

Fallout (the originals)
Half-Life (series)
Mechwarrior 2
Persona 3/4
Blazblue
STALKER
Mario Kart Double Dash
Wolfenstein 3d
Return to Castle Wolfenstein (the only good spin-off of the original)
Team Fortress 2
Pokemon Red/Blue

There are a lot of other games I really, really like, but those are the games that left a big impression on me.

Back in the old days of AC 2, I think it was more diverse and fair. There were a lot of different strategies. In the new one, I don't think there was much reason to make a smaller armor. The bigger ones were so agile and powerful. 2 was the best game.

I wish I could love AC4e it's such a great idea for a game but I find the difficulty level is just at the batshit insane level.   The Computer AI is to good and the player controls are ultimately always just a little to clunky.  Still though I love to love it.

I don't know why the basic controls are so bad. I haven't played the game in over a year, so I can't tell you the controls I used, but...

I swear there is a way to set up your controller so that you can fire all of your weapons without taking your fingers off of the flight controls. One of the big problems with the game was with the basic controls, to fire you have to stop turning. If you get your controls set up more like an FPS... look and fire on different fingers, the game is a whole lot easier.

I loved all the SSI Five Star games, especially Fantasy General.  If I could have gotten it to work* on any of my computers for the last decade I would have tried get the setting info down for use with a D&D game.

*Don't anyone recommend DOSBox, I've never been able to make heads or tails of that thing, and even when I followed the instructions to the letter it never did shit for me.

But I went nuts building a ton of mecha for each one. Its less common these days because the play changed. Maybe when AC5 comes out, anyone want to try it out.

I was the same. AC2 was by far the best. I liked AC4 but, there wasn't much of a reason to use different designs.

I'm really looking forward to 5... it sounds like they are changing a lot from 4, which is a good thing.

PC:  It's got to be Dragon Age:Origins.  I've spent a year playing it, and having my head in the toolset with no signs of stopping!   Haven't ever played a game so much.

PS2: A little known game called Draken:The Ancients' Gates.

PS3 - I'm so mad at Sony for dropping PS2 gameplay that it just sits there.

Xbox - Started Dragon Age on the Xbox, then went to PC version

Wii - can't even remember it's been so long since I've played.

DSi - Disgaea (the original).  Had an 820-hour gamesave on the PS2 version when it came out, and have 400+ hours on the DSi version

N64 - Paper Mario and Zelda OoT

Right now, Titan Quest/Immortal Throne. This Diablo-clone bends Diablo over a rock and dominates it totally. I can't believe I spent a dozen hours Saturday playing it (most with the first character I made, years ago, still haven't finished the game with him), and stiill playing it way too much.

I really enjoyed WoW... the whole time I was leveling up is was pretty damn great (except for the occasional dicktard making the obligatory guest appearance)... but once I got to the endgame it kind of broke my heart... the endgame just ain't for me. Suddenly the game ceases to be about anything but character build and stats... and every jackass who plays the game is itching to get there and annoy the shit out of me.
Meanwhile, I could go back and just level up new characters... but knowing where the road leads just sucks the fun out of that.

For some reason City of Heroes never had me feeling that way.

Who here can sell me on the fun of superhero MMOs?

QuoteWho here can sell me on the fun of superhero MMOs?
One thing I really liked about City of Heroes is that it breaks out of that psuedo-medieval model... it was great fun once I got my travel power leveled up and could jump over skyscrapers, fly the clouds, race through city streets... dodging around cars and pedestrians.
The city has slums and gleaming towers and freeways and shipping ports and refineries to fight in, around, on top of.
Another thing is the character design... which is way allows way more customization than other MMOs I've played... and since there isn't the compulsory chase after gear (the main way characters look different in WoW) you pretty much always control how your character looks... you don't have to wear stupid looking clothes just because they give the best stats.

Also, in City of Heroes at least, the storyline/setting/missions can be very pulpy... I'm not a huge superhero fan but it was easy for me to get into building a hero that looked like The Phantom and pick missions that sent me up against subterranean sorceror cults, clockwork golems, undead hordes, weird Tiki gods and mad Nazi scientists with vampire and werewolf henchmen.
The game design is a lot less addicting/obsessive so it's easy to jump in and play a mission or two and then jump out... not that I haven't played marathon sessions of COH with my friends, but it feels less like the game is manipulating you than WoW does IMO.
I've never tried Champions Online so I'm not sure how it compares... I'd imagine it has more varied content and fancier graphics at least... but I'd still be playing COH if my friends hadn't moved over to WoW... and then stopped playing MMOs altogether.

Since bumping up to a newer computer, I find myself going backwards in time with software and playing the hell out of some Unreal Tournament 2004 - particularly online stuff which is the most fun I've had in a while.  I'll have to go the D2D route to pick up UT3, I guess, but I'm in no hurry for that at this point.

So, take your Black Ops and cram it; I've got a flag to capture and people to run over in my Scorpion.

My UT handle is "Butt Fisto," and I generally hang at the Vehicle Masters' pubbie VCF server (love that shit, yo).

It's weird CTF just doesn't come in new games anymore, they're always trying out new (and usually bad) game types, while ignoring tried and tested ones that work.

I mean, you could alway include both.

I loved me plenty of CTF on UT, but I found SoF2 was the best for it--the weapon balance was amazing.

I think the bits that get me with UT is the balls-out zaniness that the modders have come up with.

That, and the announcer proclaiming, "Holy Shit!" after you've vaped numerous dudes (albeit bots in my case, but still...) in a row.  Its a giggle-maker!

My taste in games varies wildly and my top five list is as follows;

Psychonauts (XBox): What can I say, this game was creative and fun enough to keep me coming back despite a few problems with the controls (Meat Circus anyone?)

The World Ends with You (NDS): The story was an interesting concept but the battles were what made this game shine. It involves you focusing on both screens at once to keep your characters alive and fighting in synch.

Megaman Battle Network Series (GBA) Another handheld game albeit older. The story was mediocre (its aimed at tween-agers I assume) but again, the battle system pulls it through. Two 3x3 grids aligned next to each other where you and your opponent(s) fight using various 'battle chips' at one another. Nostalgia may or may not be a factor in this one.

Star Wars Battlefront 2 (PS2/Xbox) Put yourself in the shoes of a single clone trooper and rush into a massive battle between your side and your opponents. Despite dying constantly (I don't claim to have any skill at this game), being able to simply come back after a few seconds and charge right into the fray once more makes this a mindless kind of fun.

Steel Battalion No real justification here, I just really like the game despite the harsh loss of every save after any given death in game.

I can't pick just one favorite, as which is my favorite depends alot on my mood.

My top 10 favorite games that I keep going back to over and over again, however, are (in no particular order):

1.) Dragon Age: Origins - Great game. Gold standard of the genre. You all know it well enough by now, or have heard enough, that nothing I say will surprise or inform anyone.

2.) Alpha Protocol: I've had nothing but fun with this game. There's nothing especially groundbreaking or innovative about it story or game-play wise except for the boundless freedom you have in making choices; the game has multiple possible endings that are directly tied into who you pissed off along the way and who you made friends of. That alone makes it very replayable, as you can always try different approaches both in dialog and in action. The story is somewhat cliched but still works well, and the game play, while nothing remarkable, is fun. My favorite in the Spy-fi genre.

3.) the "Thief" trilogy. Another that is the Gold Standard of it's Genre. Thief 2 and 3 especially are great. These are good when I want that slow tension, sneaking in shadows, picking pockets, trying to konk a guard on the head before he turns around and sees me, hiding bodies behind bushes kind of constant anxiety. Love it.

4.) Evil Genius - A lair builder based on the premise of being a 1960's style Bond villain with an evil plan to destroy the world. And yes, you CAN complete your doomsday device and do just that. Maniacal fun. The game has some serious flaws, but I enjoy it enough to overlook them, but man do I wish that it had come out with a refined sequel.

5.) Master of Orion 2. OMG. MOO2. Another "Gold Standard", this time of the 4X genre. Many have tried to recreate the experience of this game with updated gameplay and mechanics and all have still fallen short of this seminal classic. The wife and I occasionally waste a whole weekend playing a network game of MOO2 against each other.

6.) Left4Dead 1&2 - I know, it's simple, it's cheesy, but sometimes I just really really want to run around and shoot zombies in the head. And when I do, L4D is there for me.

7.) XCOM: Enemy Unknown. It's like playing chess where sometimes your pawns explode and blow your fingers off. Fun, fun, fun.

8.) Mount and Blade: Warband. Sandbox 3rd person game of mounted combat in a medieval style setting. No story except the one you make yourself. Befriend various lords (and ladies), set up industry and trade in various cities, be a mercenary or a merchant or a bandit or a vassal or set your sights high and try to become a conquering king... or do them all in the course of a single game. Lots of mods mean infinite replayability, and as it's a very open ended game, there's no reason any particular game must end (unless you manage to conquer the entire map... good luck!). The game is deceptively simple at first blush, but has surprising depth once you get into it.

9.) Total War series. Turn based strategy and Real Time Troop-based combat in several eras: Rome, Medieval, Age of Napoleon, etc. Lots of Mods available as well. I especially enjoy the "Stainless Steel" mod for Medieval which makes the game much more intricate and challenging.

10.) City of Villains - The best MMO I have ever played, which sunsets forever today. RIP COV.

Saints Row the Third The game rarely gets old or repetitive, unlike Grand Theft Auto.  It's also funny as hell and over the top, and I love the character customization aspects.

Those were awesome. I also really loved the Wing Commander series back in the day. There's nothing that really does that genre well anymore. The X games come closest, but they're just not the same as screaming down with afterburners on a Kilrathi fighter while trying to get a missile lock.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2, SEGA Mega Drive (or SEGA Genesis for the US peeps).

I've played through literally hundreds of games on most platforms, but somehow it's just a few retro childhood experiences that stand out. Must be sentimental.

Other faves (no particular order):

Flashback
Street Fighter 2
X-Men Vs Street Fighter
Rocket Knight Adventures/Sparkster
Sam and Max Hit The Road
Day of the Tentacle
Zack McCracken and the Alien Mind Benders
Portal

TMNT - Arcade Version
Pirates Gold (Commodore 64!)
Yie Ar Kung Fu (Commodore 64!)
Blood (Monolith Games 1st person shooter)
Deus Ex

Sigh...

The Infinity Engine provided me with the greater disappointment I had with an electronic rpg. I followed Baldurs Gate 2 development anxiously, raised hard-earned money to buy it, and then... it was more of a glorified tactical combat game than what I would consider a rpg. Strings and strings of boring tactical combats with some clichéd (and linear) story in-between. Not even Planescape Torment (a game I actually love) redeemed the Infinity Engine for me, after that.

But my all-time preferred isometric rpg is Arcanum: of Steamworks & Magicka Obscura. It has some big flaws (like combat) sure, but what it does good – the roleplaying and  the "choice & consequence" aspects – is simply superb! Also, its Victorian atmosphere and mood (with a violins soundtrack) is ridiculously cool.

DOTA 2 is my current game of choice. I've clocked so many hours with it in the past few months... :o :D

@Silva, I am...I've beat the campaign. Just getting back into multiplayer and checking out the arcade and stuffs.

And, as I imagine you will ask, I have weird feelings about the campaign.

I can see it.

I often feel like I'm quite alone in the opinion that BG2 is the weakest of the series. :/

The msot entertaining game experience was over the easter weekend I played and completed Jedi Outcast on the PC. Probably about a decade ago.

Thats worrying news for me, since I waste my time more with the campaign than in multiplayer with these kinds of game.

Why do you have weird feelings ? Isnt it so good as the first one ?

Do you think the first one is better ? I remember (vaguely) playing the beginning of BG 1 and finding it somewhat cool. But then my PC at that time simply died. My disappointment with BG 2 made me ignore the first one.

I think so, yes.

BG2 suffered from the "More is better, right?" syndrome.

I haven't played through it in a long time (don't play a huge amount of computer games), but I think my all time favourite game is Ultima Underworld 2 (as evidenced by my signature)

Although it's not particularly original, my favourite game that I play often is Doom 2 (with the addition of Plutonia and some of the fan made WADS)  I even put some effort in to a Doom 2 deadworld for All Flesh Must Be Eaten.

I'll start off by saying that the campaign is incredibly fun. Each mission is a completely different beast, with unique points to all of them. The Zerg campaign army customization does it's very best to ruin the vanilla Zerg army of the multiplayer with it's dozen or so unique units. From a gameplay perspective, it's best in class for RTS.

It feels weird to me because it changes the entire feel of the Starcraft universe to something much closer to World of Warcraft/Warcraft 3. I always felt the "Heroes" of the Starcraft universe were lucky or resourceful, being only a bit better then the other fighters of their station. In the Zerg campaign, they're demigods whose personal squabbles are shaping the galaxy. So, from a story perspective I have mixed feelings, as I was a big fan of the darker and grittier feel of the previous Starcraft games.
