Title: WH40k: Gathering Storm- Fall of Cadia
Post by: Crüesader on January 16, 2017, 02:59:58 PM
Okay, so apparently someone at GW decided to move the story forward.  A bit.  Kind of.  It's a bit strange, and I'll explain why I won't go into detail.  Of course, I'll hit the notes regarding the meat & potatoes of this supplement.

-Price Point:  You're buying a GW product, it's stupid expensive.  You already know this.  But right now, if you're still playing 40k- you could very well be asking if it's worth the purchase.  So I'll make it easy.  Do you play an Imperium army?  Then it might be useful.  Do you have a BUNCH of Imperium armies?  It is pretty cool with the formations you can use.  Do you want to play during a warp-storm?  It has rules for that madness, so you might want it.  However, it's pretty easy to get your hands on all these items without spending $50.00 on a book that is overwhelmingly 70% fluff.

-Fluff:  I've only read a little bit of it, but it seems like for some reason, Abaddon the Useless has decided to launch 13th Crusade 2.0.  If Chaos wasn't constantly failing to be the threat it is supposed to be, GW wouldn't have to launch these Crusades over and over again (and constantly face the reality that Chaos actually sucks, but not as bad as Tyranids).  Shitloads of Imperium armies flock to Cadia, the Adeptus Mechanicus' head honcho finds some good shit and a Harlequin Farseer tells him to go to Cadia and unfuck that shit post-haste.  I'll fill you in on the fluff once I read it, which will require me taking a signficantly large poop so I can focus on it.

-Formations:  There's two bigger ones- one is really Admech/Knights/Skitarii focused, but they can get some fuck-nasty bonuses through Canticles of the Omnissiah.  The other is this absurd mixup of a lot of Imperium shit with a bit of versatility- but it essentially allows you to put a destroyed unit into ongoing reserves on a 5+.  The other formation requires the new Characters, and they share a Warlord trait between the lot of them.  Big whoop.

-Units:  This book brings the data for the three new units, all of which can be used as HQ for ANY Imperium army.  Yes, you read that- ANY.  Here they are:

Overall, I've only played with the Inquisitor and I find the book to be a bit overpriced for what it offers.  If you like 40k fluff, then it's all here.  I wasn't a fan of the Warzone Fenris and Wrath of Magnus stuff- but Rising Storm got my eye because I have a shitload of Black Templars and Scions and some buddies are AdMech junkies.  For Imperium players, it might be awesome.  However, it's been rumored that the 'unlikely allies' referenced in the book will soon get their own box of models as well as the next book.  I won't spoil who they are, but let's just say we found out who made the Pylons and some of those xenos 'distant relatives' out there aren't as 'distant' from each other as we thought.

I used to pray to Tzeentch for something, anything to bring Blessed Change to the 40k timeline.

After the failed colostomy that is Age of Sigmar, they need to put any and all possible brakes on the ChangeTrain.

Allegedly, the company is not going to 'End Times' the game.  The story is that the creative director, or CEO, or 'boss' or something is an actual player of the game.  If anything the story is going to move forward, which might be good.

8th Edition is supposed to borrow elements for AoS.  And don't get me wrong- AoS fluff is stupid, but the gameplay isn't too awful and it's certainly not a 'go-to' game for me, but it's an alternative to 40k and the models are actually pretty slick.  Most of the people who are howling about how bad AoS changes to 40k would be?  Tau players.  Because AoS has different rules for monstrous creatures and those rules make it so the MC starts losing effectiveness after taking damage (so of course the scrubs are crying about muh riptide).
