This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Ghost Whistler

I played 40k for the first time in about 15 years today.

And I liked it!

If only it wasn't so expensive and I didn't live in a gaming cultural vacuum.

:D
"Ghost Whistler" is rated PG-13 (Parents strongly cautioned). Parental death, alien battles and annihilated worlds.

Yeah I've been looking at other mini games to try out, 40k is just TOO expensive for an occasional lark.

I yet have to play it, I just painted some minis... but I liked the painting...
You ARE the enemy. You are not from "our ranks". You never were. You and the filth that are like you have never had any sincere interest in doing right by this hobby. You\'re here to aggrandize your own undeserved egos, and you don\'t give a fuck if you destroy gaming to do it.

There's a VASSAL module for it you know.  You can play it without any miniatures at all.

There's also that handy paper mini template I made . . .

Personally, I'm thinking I want to snatch up a copy of Aetherverse before all the extant copies completely disappear.  That was a neat ruleset.

Warhammer Skirmish is much cheaper to play because you only need 10-20 models.   $50 will get you into the game.   Google the phrase Lunch Hammer for the small battle rules.

eBay is the place to buy 40k minis.  Buy the older minis that someone bought, painted a bit and then give up.  These are prefectly fine minis at 20% of the price.

I don't paint so I buy painted armies.  $300 can get you a really attractively done army which retails unpainted for $600 or more.

What I'd really like is some kind of painting service or some shit.  I like the modeling aspect, and the visual design, and even painting a few reference models, but hand painting an entire army just gets to be bloody tedious.  I'd like to be able to assemble the figs, give an artist some idea or a reference model for the color scheme and designs I want, and then let them do the tedious task of then repeating it again and again across dozens of models.

I also really want to try my hand at casting my own resin.  It actually doesn't sound terribly difficult and would be one way to save some bucks on miniatures, and also good for "design your own army" games like Stargrunt and Aetherverse.

Well wanting to take up expensive hobby gaming while unemployed as the world faces recession is always a good idea!

That said, I find myself pretty impressed at it all (Warhammer/GW - not global recession). I remember when 40K first came out and I dabbled with it as a kid. I've always been interested in the warhammer universe(s - though more so 40K) and to see how it's become a major brand with impressive looking product lines sold in their own unique shops (though will they last if the country lurhces further down the plughole!) is pretty impressive. If expensive :D

The smaller scale games (Blood Bowl, Necromunda, Warhammer Quest) are cheaper to get into and often even more fun.

Those don't interest me.

Really there is no way around the cost. But perhaps if I bum around the local GW store long enough they'll let me play with their toys :D

You don't know what you're missing, believe me. Blood Bowl is one of the most fun things in the world of table top gaming. In fact it's one of the most fun things, in the world. Full stop.

Make it obvious you're a newbie player. At my local GW shop the staff used to run huge battles for new players all the time. In fact I think that's about all they ever did.

I did, that's how I got to play the Black Reach scenario yesterday.

I was never really impressed with how Blood Bowl played. It's a fun idea. I've never played Necromunda, but i'm not interested really.

What's the best way to start with 40K?

I won't buy the Black Reach set, because i'd rather buy the main rules and go from there. Boxes sets like these are ok for a couple of games, or if you're very young perhaps, but you still need the complete game. So BR is out.

I've seen a copy of the 5th ed rules on ebay, which is (currently) much cheaper than the rrp. So that seems like a good start (unless anyone has a copy here they want to sell or swap or something).

BR has all the 5th Ed rules and all the rules needed to run the miniatures included, plus well over double the cost of the box set in minis.  The only thing missing from the rulebook is fluff, it's still a complete game.

It's a good deal, the best box set they've ever put out.
