This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Quote from: Blackhand;612344Well Kaz, I think you nailed it.  The GW hate I don't get. *SNIP*

Yeah, I'd rather a game gain some popularity that was a little more static for largely selfish reasons, but also because like RPGs, wargaming isn't a hobby in great health and 40K is a tough sell for newbies.

I also run IG, mostly because I like the idea of foot-sloggers and tanks. I actually do pretty well when I play, but I don't compete in tourneys or anything.

The reason I hate GW is because of their business practices and the way they price their products and the way they run their tournaments. Also how quick they were to copyright shit they didn't even create (See Moorcock Chaos). I'd rather give my meager earnings to a company like Reaper, who as far as I can tell, is a much classier organization.

Every time I go into our local shop, I see this book. I've battled its siren's call for a while (gorgeous production values, codified ruleset) but whenever I get close to pulling the trigger I read a review or hear someone say the rules aren't great or some other problem with it.

I don't want to turn this into a "Sell me" thread, but since you're high on it, care to try to convince to come around to your line of thinking? I've always wanted to do more in the 1/72 scale because they can look really good and be really cheap. Should I invest in Field of Glory?

Kaz, have you checked out Wargames Factory?  20-32 soldiers or 12 cavalry or 2 war machines for $20 a box, and man they are of the best quality as well.

I have couple of boxes of Greek and Persian warriors I've got to use with AD&D's Age of Heroes Historical Reference.  That particular Field of Glory link looks like a good excuse for me to get more.

As cheap as they are, it's totally awesome.

Yes! I have a box of their Greeks, which I desperately need to find an excuse to put together and paint.

They make great conversion material for Warhammer as well.  I have two boxes of their Shock Troopers to make into a 30 man Chaos Cultist unit as well!

Also, the viking and samurai lines are top notch!

The Shock Troops are good for Steel Legion or Krieg.

The Vikings and Saxons are awesome, also check the Roman line for the ancient Germans.  Lots of historical barbaric goodness.

Wooden Ships and Iron Men

The age of sail, done right!

Still have my Squad Leader, COI, COD, and GI: Anvil of Victory, along with Panzer Leader, Panzer Blitz, Tobruk, and Liberty.

Haven't played any of these since the 90's though.

Do currently play Age of Reason wargames using 1/72 scale minis with 1776 or Fudge rules.

I have like 30 Shock Troops sans arms and heads someone left me (he was converting or something, I dunno, but I have a reputation among my circle of friends as being a conversion guy so he figured I'd find something to do with them).

I have some Empire spear arms from my short-lived WFB days. I've thought about tossing some of those on the guys and making them a kind-of ultramodern Swiss Guard or something.

For my IG army, I used these guys:

Buddy and I ordered the bag of 80 dudes (which is 40 of one kind and 40 of the above) and swapped out. So I have 8 squads of these cats as my footsloggers.

Fudge wargame rules? My initial internet search was fruitless! Tell me more, please.

Necromunda
FoW - which is new to me but awesome

I got into GW when I first bought 2nd edition WH40K in I think 94 or 95
Actually I got into GW w/ Heroquest (92?) which used alot of Citadel mini's and to me that is very GW

I have been playing tabletop wargames forever. I hate when the rules change and make way for newer books and minis but by the time it goes full swing Im usually on it.

I love them so much I have personas that I play while I play! The Lazer Wulfe: Primarch of the Brother-hood of the Most Hated.

Hive Fleet Muh'Nun'Nah - The Tyranid scourge of the the Stars

Herd Lord Fekul-Hoof - Twisted Beast Lord of Wissenland

Abu-Dabis - Sandpeople and raiders to be feared under the Necromundan sky

List goes on and on ... and it makes it fun! Hell I got Nazi helmets for FoW!

I love Combat Commander: Europe. The game is probably the best hex-and-counter wargame I've ever played. The game is pretty traditional, but mixes the patch enough to make it a great simulation and fun. Just don't expect armor.

Crusader Rex is fantastic, as is its sister game, Hammer of the Scots. Both are fun and thematic.  The game uses one sided wooden blocks to simulate the fog of war. If I had to pick the better of the two, I would probably say Crusader Rex.

As for a skirmish wargame, I'm not really sure. I've yet to find one that really matches my preferences.

Oh yes, if you are looking for lighter fare, Command and Colors: Ancients is fun. Many do not consider this a wargame, but I do, so your mileage may vary.

Ghost Whistler

Has anyone tried Relic Knights?
"Ghost Whistler" is rated PG-13 (Parents strongly cautioned). Parental death, alien battles and annihilated worlds.

Not yet, though I liked the miniatures a lot. Are the rules out already?
