This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Video Games: What are you playing?

Quote from: Kiero;1083366What I won't be playing (since I don't have a hot gaming rig or next generation console) is Jedi: Fallen Order. Although in that case because they're expecting me to invest in generic, preppy, white guy protagonist (with a strong Anakin Skywalker vibe), with no customisation. Like it's the 1990s or something, and you can only have the character the developers decided was appropriate. Mass Effect let me make the protagonist my own over a decade ago.

Yes, but Mass Effect was an RPG, from what I understand this game is an action adventure game akin to Tomb Raider, and features a single protagonist with a history.

Not every game needs character customization or an open world.  For instance, the arguably best RPG in this decade is The Witcher 3, and you play a fixed protagonist.  I think it all depends on the tone of the game and what the developers have in mind.

Just got Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 for free, thanks to a voucher on ebay. I was looking for 4-player games for the XBox 360 to get around the numerous fights my children (I have three) have over who's turn it is on the various Lego games.

Finally gave up on GTA4 and tried Sleeping Dogs for an hour - I'm sold. Even if we overlook the clunky controls and crap vehicle section, the core open-world gameplay of GTA4 is not fun. For a single reason: that Liberty City has the fastest police response time of anywhere in the world, and an infinite supply of cops too. You can't do anything without having cops shooting at you, and after a while spending half the game trying to lose pursuit just gets boring.

Felt the same about GTA4 too. Have you tried Watchdogs 2? Found it actually good, specially with the different ways to mess with the city through hacking. Forget about the first game though, it's weak sauce.

Into the Breach is addicting as hell. Love the desert team and their control of smoke/sands.

I haven't; I'll have to look out for it, see if I can get it cheap.

Loving Sleeping Dogs, even the shooting sections aren't awful like GTA4. It's like someone played GTA4 and looked to fix all the things that were wrong with it. The story is much more engaging, too. They even managed to top the soundtrack (the radio stations in GTA4 are really good) - with the inclusion of Ninja Tunes radio, one of my favourite labels of all time.

I saw rumours of a sequel that was eventually canned, is anyone doing anything with the engine, I wonder? It would make an awesome base for all sorts of open world games.

While I enjoyed this game as well, Square Enix considered this game a failure (it sold only around 1.5 million copies).  Originally, the studio creating this game (United Front Studios) had no title--for a while, Activision backed them and this was going to be the third game in something called the True Crime series, but Activision cancelled the project and Square Enix took it over and this became Sleeping Dogs.  The published was expecting higher numbers and had a poor year with their franchises.

The developer did make a new game in the world using the engine, called Triad Wars, but it was designed as a Free to Play Multiplayer game and only lasted a year--I think the fans were looking for a sequel.  The studio shut down soon after that.

Only remnants of this games IP right now is supposedly a movie might be made of the story.

That's a shame, it's really rather well done. Better than GTA4 and also better than the new system in Assassin's Creed they switched to with AC3.

A movie sounds a little redundant to me, given the plot could have come out of dozens of Hong Kong films made over the last few decades.

EDIT: Now it's getting really circular. Apparently Donnie Yen has the option for the Sleeping Dogs movie, and intends to play Wei Shen. He played an undercover cop in Special ID not that long ago, and has played quite a number of ass-kicking cops in his time.

Recently got Anno 1800 on PC (via the Uplay store, rather than Epic)
Very good fun, but you need to set aside a few hours to play it for a session, or it's not worth getting into it.

Replaying the original Assassin's Creed.

My god this game was bumpy... but still was quite fun.

I liked the second and it's semi-trilogies a lot. Then they went and changed the combat system in AC3, which I hated.

Shame, because I love the setting, just can't stand combat in it. Not sure if it will be any better coming out of Sleeping Dogs.

Been playing Mahjong. Yes, the one that comes with Windows.

Go ahead and laugh. I certainly do!!

I'm neck deep in major projects (and have been for a long time) and I can't muster the energy for fast paced games - feels too much like work right now. I had been thinking of doing some retro-gaming, but I've had a very hit and miss experience with emulators.

BTW, is there any new turn based gaming out there that's worth a look?

Yeah. Same here. the 2-trilogy was probably the best. 3... just felt so damned sloppy and slow to react (control wise).
