The Butcher

Finally got Legend of Grimrock (among others). Great old school SSI-style dungeon-crawling fun.

Quote from: JRT;837646Yes, but there's nothing to indicate that less than stellar reception of the MMO has "damaged the brand", as it seems people are playing Skyrim today, people keep asking about the next ES game, and its success has influenced other games to be more open world.  If anything, the brand is stronger than ever, as there are a series of tie-in lore books, a new iOS card game coming out, etc.  So it doesn't seem like it needs any "rescuing".
Agreed, though it takes a lot to completely destroy a brand (see: Star Trek, Star Wars). But some installments are pretty universally seen as "mis-steps" (see: Enterprise, Jar-Jar), and TESO has had some serious hiccups during launch.

Also, see: Hyperbole. ;) :p :D

Gunpoint: 2d stealth/puzzle game with a lot of rewiring to do and a cool jazzy soundtrack. Check out the trailer. Very funny too.
May I say that? Yes, I may say that!

I've been rattling on about if they can manage to kill final fantasy with a few more lousy single player games. They've mentioned the FF7 remake will include some alterations to the story and someone came up with something that I'm convinced could do it in one blow.

Final Fantasy Seven with Cloud and his sister, Lightning.

Pretty sure that'd sink the franchise.

I think Final Fantasy X was the last one, I actually finished all the way through.
The most recent FF games have just bored the ever-loving shit out of me.

Just bought Ultimate General: Gettysburg because, hey, screw the Howling Mob.

Played through the first battle twice, on lowest difficulty. Stalemate first time, epic win second.

It's a really well done game, one I wish I had more time to learn.

Went a little bit crazy during the Steam Summer Sale. One of the hidden gems I found was Star Hammer: The Vanguard Prophecy. It's a turn-based simultaneous space fleet game. It kinda reminds me of a Full Thrust miniature game in that you plot your moves then both sides move and fire simultaneously.

On top of that there are systems to re-route power between shields, weapons and engines. You can also re-balance shield power between 6 facings. I loved that type of stuff in the old X-Wing and Tie Fighter games.

There's also some RPG style character development with your command fleet and a bit of story, but you can pretty much ignore the story.

It's a game I didn't realize I was looking for. Now if I could find a game that emulates the Stargrunt or 40K style table top experience that wasn't a RTS or X-Com retread I would be in nirvana.

I tried it for a little while, but couldn't get into it. Is it 3d, or is that just the display? I couldn't find any way to roll my ship or otherwise present shields.

A nice education blog.

Yeah, If you are looking for barrel rolls it's probably not going to be your thing. It's definitely not Elite or Wing Commander. It has some 3D aspects but it is very much a limited implementation. You are limited in how far "up" and "down" you can go and it has discreet altitudes levels. That's the type of stuff that makes me think of a miniature game.

The shield presentation issue is handled by being able to reroute power to the damaged shields from the other facings.

Dark Souls 2.  I'm loving it; it's challenging and vastly difficult, without being Nintendo Hard.  The game is unrelentingly lethal, but the lethality comes from things that can reasonably be anticipated by a player who pays attention.

Don't want to fall off cliffs?  Don't sprint around ledges or do diving rolls near them.

Don't want to get clobbered by bosses (and even "hall trash") with massive attacks?  Pay attention to the windup.

Don't want to be swarmed?  Use the environment to funnel hostile numbers in ways that are manageable.

Don't want to be ambushed?  Walk rather than run/sprint when exploring a new area, and look and listen.  Not every hiding spot will be visible, but that clatter-thud of an armored form landing behind you?  Not just ambiance.

Back to CK 2 and Dwarf Fortress for me.

Just installed the Elder Kings mod for CK 2 which seems well done but lacking in documentation.

As for Dwarf Fortress I'm neck deep in !FUN! after a werebeast attack. I've got two confirmed bites in the hospital and I suspect at least 3-4 more running around. Next full moon is gonna be a blast.

Ever play the "Game of Thrones" mod, for CK2?

Right now, I'm still playing Smash Bros for Wii U, but my youngest got Splatoon for her birthday and it looks like a lot of fun. The kids have been playing that non-stop.

I've got it installed but I haven't really played it yet, though I hear it's pretty good. Honestly though with the right DLC I like vanilla CK2 quite a bit, I usually rune Legacy of Rome, The Old Gods, and Charlemagne.

Hardly touched any PC games recently, just too tired and busy.
Last night I DID actually have a go at Windward again, which I haven't played for some time.
I DO have a long list go games to play though when I have more energy and motivation to do so.

My Son got Rocket League last night, he's been hanging out to get it and loves it.
