Video Games: What are you playing?

The Butcher

Bought Divinity: Original Sin during the Steam sale and played about five minutes of it (created a Witch and a Fighter). I'm not sure whether it's the same-old-same-old fantasy stuff or the turn-based combat (haven't played a turn-based CRPG since NWN) or the interface that feels clunky but... meh. I'll give it another try, eventually.

Well, my wife and I splurged on a Wii U for Christmas. It's presently in hiding, waiting for December 24th when we'll pull it out and wrap it.

Now, the question becomes, what games to get?  It comes with one of the Super Mario games, so we can't exactly escape that, but outside of Mario Kart 8 I'm open to suggestions.

Well, what sort of games are you interested in? I enjoy fighting/action games, so I've gotten Smash Bros, Bayonetta 2, Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge, etc.
"...player narration and DM fiat fall apart whenever there's anything less than an incredibly high level of trust for the DM. The general trend of D&D's design up through the end of 4e is to erase dependence on player-DM trust as much as possible, not to create antagonism, but to insulate both sides from it when it appears." - Brandes Stoddard

The one sort of game that I can't play is the first person shooter; it gets me motion sick.

I've thought about something like Smash Bros or Hyrule Warriors, and I'm open to even an adventure game too.  I do know the kids like the LEGO games (we get them for the PC usually), and we've had success with the Wii Sports Resort and other games oriented in that direction.

There's a good and interesting game buried in here...it's turn based, and yeah, that interface is user-hostile. There's not much hand-holding here, so you might want to get an online guide to help you through some of the quests, at least until you get the hang of things.

There are many, many, trap options in character development...don't get too attached to the characters you have now, you'll probably re-roll after a few levels of frustration, going to a pair of characters that really works. The 'easy' henchmen to get are a 2h fighter and a wizard, fwiw.

A nice education blog.

I'll certainly give it a try later, when Mrs. The Butcher gets onboard and we'll do a co-op run. I rolled a Witch and a sword-and-board Fighter.

Right now, our co-op slot is occupied by Borderlands 2 (wrapping up Assault On Dragon Keep DLC — awesome) and my single-player slot is taken by Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim (giants and dragons are kicking my sorry level 6 sword-and-board Orc ass. Wonder if a sorcerer would've been easier?).

Though I'm nowhere near finishing Skyrim, I'm uninstalling D:OS (we already have Borderlands: the Pre-Sequel and World of Warcraft: Warlords of Draenor queued for our co-op spot) to make room for any one of several interesting little thing I picked up during the Steam sale. I mean, Skyrim is tits, but I like the idea of having a more "casual" go-to CRPG (like The Witcher or Fallout: New Vegas) or FPS (like the Far Cry series pack, 1-3. Blood Dragon looks sweet).

I'm taking recommendations. :)

Doom

Well, if you're looking for quickie reviews of the games you mentioned, here goes:

Witcher: is a little dark, if Skyrim was too serious for you, you won't like Witcher.

Fallout: New Vegas :it has its charms, but I sure liked Skyrim more. Fallout is a much easier game to "beat", fwiw.

Far Cry: Very enjoyable FPS, not the raw fun of Borderlands, but it allows for more sneaking around and variety in gameplay. Well worth your time.

Blood Dragon: ????

You won't regret it. The Wii U easily has the best library of the current gen (seriously it isn't even close). My comments:

Super Mario 3D world - a 3d mario game with the sensibilities of a 2d mario game. The most fun I've ever had with 3d mario.

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze - a really nice semi-difficult old school platformer

Zelda Wind Waker HD - a great remake of the best 3d Zelda game. If you like adventure type games it's worth it.

Mario Kart 8 - holy shit this is fun.

Smash Bros - holy holy holy shit.

NES remix - really fun for short bursts of gameplay.

Captain toad treasure tracker - a sort of "rotate the world" puzzle game. Awesome fun.

Plus do t forget the Wii U is 100% compatible with Wii games so if you missed out on that there's some great games in its 1,000+ Title library.

Also don't forget the eshop and indie games. Shovel Knight alone is worth a whole paycheck if you at all like 8-bit Platformers.
Disclaimer: I attach no moral weight to the way you choose to pretend to be an elf.

Currently running: The Great Pendragon Campaign & DC Adventures - Timberline
Currently Playing: AD&D

Spike

Well I WOULD be playing my insanely modded Skyrim, except: Insanely modded. Fucker is far too unstable. Also: I can't progress on my level 86 sniper-ninja, at least on the main quest, because the Inn in Riverrun (or whatever its called), where the Blades hang out, is seriously bugged out.  I had this problem with unmodded Skyrim on the Xbox 360, but it seems to only happen to me, as no one seems to talk about it online.

I did play abou 80% of the main story in Call of Duty:Advanced Warfare before I got caught up in other things. I'm not much for PvP gaming, which limits my enjoyment slightly. Also, I much preferred the Ghost Recon version for my ability to select my gear, and upgrade it.  But I think that game is gone now, along with all my 3E D&D books... I wuz robbed, I tells ya.
For you the day you found a minor error in a Post by Spike and forced him to admit it, it was the greatest day of your internet life.  For me it was... Tuesday.

For the curious: Apparently, in person, I sound exactly like the Youtube Character The Nostalgia Critic.   I have no words.

The console came with Super Mario 3D World, so we're covered there.  I know I'm going to get Mario Kart 8, and I've thought off and on about the Zelda title and Hyrule Warriors.

How does Smash Bros play on the Wii-motes? I figured you'd want a regular handheld for that.

Arkansan

Been playing Avernum: Escape from the Pit, great old school CRPG,  kinda gives me a Falloutish vibe in style though the roleplaying elements aren't as in depth. Nothing revolutionary but a really solid experience and a steal on Steam at 9.99.

The oregon trail its good fun

it did freeze up on me at one point though which was annoying as i was almost to oregon
If your having tier problems i feel bad for you son i got 99 problems but caster supremacy aint 1.

Apology\'s if there is no punctuation in the above post its probably my autism making me forget.

I actually installed it and you're right: all serious, dark and Bioware-y. I think I can enjoy it if only I can wrap my head around the point-and-click bliw-by-blow combat, which right now comes off as a bit clunky to me.

Remember those crappy 1980s cyborg movies? They made a whole game patterned after those, using the Far Cry 3 engine. Link.

And it's one of the most fun games I've played in years.  Tongue in cheek without being a bad FPS.
I made a blog: Southern Style GURPS

It's worse than clunky in so many ways. The worst part is when you instinctively try to backpedal during a sword fight, your character counter-intuitively turns his back to the enemy for extra damage.
