This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Stop Hacking Stuff!

Ghost Whistler

I got an email from Codemasters telling me that a week earlier they'd been hacked!

Is there some effort to derail the online gaming industry?

I used to play LotrO, briefly, at the start of last year. So i guess i'll have to change my debit card.

Codemasters said the billing information is handled by a third party, so your CC wasn't compromised.

Also, I got an email from Epic Games.

So yeah, there seems to be a trend -- probably the same group.

Sony, Eidos, Epic, Codemasters...I might be missing something...

All of the games set there have a bittersweetness that I find much harder to take than the ridiculous adolescent posturing of so-called \'grittily realistic\' games. So maybe one reason I like them as a setting is because they are far more like the real world: colourful, crazy, full of strange creatures and people, eternal and yet changing, deeply beautiful and sometimes profoundly bitter."

I got the Epic email. It looked like spam, but apparently it's real. I think it's part of the same hack. I don't really know, but I don't think I ever had any financial data stored with Epic, mainly because their games aren't.

I don't recall LotrO being with Turbine at the time I played. I thought that  when they merged the servers. I sincerely hope they haven't compromised my info , but it's been so long I can't even remember the log in details to delete the account!

I think, with all this (and the fact 99% of online games are shit), i'm done with online gaming. I can't run anything for the PC anymore and the xbox has become a joke.

Seems to me that Codemasters had a lot of stuff get taken, including XBL details.

It's not just about online games, sir.  They've gone after banks, the NHS, the FBI, federal contractors.

This shit is just getting started.  There's a whole flock of internet anarchists out there, and no less than NATO has basically declared war on them.

If shit doesn't get under control soon, we're going to have a proper cyberwar on our hands, and it will get really ugly really quickly.  With the AnonOps and the LulzSecs and the rest of the troglodyte 13-yo script kiddie brigades drawing all the attention, the Turks, the Russians, the Chinese, and all the rest of the much darker parts of Internet crime will have a fuckin' field day.

It's escalating, and it's not going to end well.

What RPG would you play this campaign with?

Anonymous freeing gamers from the tyranny of online gaming. Fucking douche-bags!

Yeah sure  it was funny when they hacked Scientology, not so much when they hacked the PSN, luckily the CC I used was several years out of date.

Almost fell for a phishing attempt from 'hotmail'.

The other day I had a very convincing email from 'blizzard' offering me 7 days free WoW on my account. The art, layout and (almost) everything were very convincing. The prince of Nigeria could learn a thing or two.

I just reject anything asking me for any kind of information now. It's the only way (not that I gave it out before of course, though more out of righteous indignation).

Ghost Whistler, we all know you hate most games that come out, and here you started this thread. Are you the hacker what jacked Sony and sega? Are you hiding in plain sight?

There is no "they."  There is no "Anonymous."  It's misleading and a waste of time for anyone to think so.

Sega got hit a couple days ago.

I suspect this is a CIA front providing the US Government a reason to clamp down on internet freedom. If they can regulate it even more (and look up how many domains have been seized illegally by the FBI over the last year, you'd be surprised), they can control what we know even more than they do already.

You're joking, right?

It's not a CIA front.  It's a bunch of users and armed with script-kiddy troopers from 4chan-related communities doing a bunch of shit and posting about it on Twitter, for Christ's sake.  The group is calling itself LulzSec, and they've declared open war on all governments, banks, and corporations, calling other hacker cells/groups to assist them.

Of course the media and general public will continue on in ignorance and perpetuate false information so no one will having a fucking clue as to what's actually going on.

Lulz did not hit Sega. They've even offered to nail the hackers who did.

Also, you have way too much faith in government.

I don't have faith in anything.  I just don't make uninformed guesses.

In related news, today Lulz and Anonymous are teaming up. They plan to hit banks and classified information sources and release all the info on the net.
