This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Steve Jackson tests the Kickstarter waters, and finds them most welcoming:

I've always enjoyed Ogre Miniatures more than just about any other 6mm SF ruleset, and I've tried a few.  I think the faint hint of absurdity present in the background keeps it on a beer-and-pretzels level and so forestalls a lot of the usual wargaming arguments that tend to break out.
D&D is becoming Self-Referential.  It is no longer Setting Referential, where it takes references outside of itself. It is becoming like Ouroboros in its self-gleaning for tropes, no longer attached, let alone needing outside context.

It was like this at the beginning of the d20 era with a cornucopia of awesome new games being released.
Blackmoor grew from a single Castle to include, first, several adjacent Castles (with the forces of Evil lying just off the edge of the world to an entire Northern Province of the Castle and Crusade Society's Great Kingdom.

At 16 pounds, that makes me wonder if they aren't going to include some metal minis, like the Battletech introductory box set.

I must admit, I'm staggered at the success a lot of RPG related stuff is having on Kickstarter. It amazes me that there's enthusiasm and cash out there for this stuff seeing as though every 2nd Tuesday there's an "RPGs are DEAD! Dead I tell you... we're all screwed!" post on various forums. Guess it just shows a further shift from traditional brick and mortar stores to online purchasing.

Having seen the absolutely ludicrous prices people will pay for things at cons, it doesn't surprise me in the slightest.  I do think it's more evidence for "the RPG industry is dead", though.

I think Kickstarter is huge evidence that it isn't dead. I think it is evidence that people were really angry at the handful of big guys and that now niche projects can be created and disseminated to their respective audiences. That's a really cool thing.

Monte Cook had an article on this same topic in the last week.

Sacrosanct

Yeah, he had a huge success, but at the cost of pissing off A LOT of retailers.  Before he launched his Kickstarter, he had stores doing preorders for the game.  Then he announced his Kickstarter and all of those preorders got canceled as they switched to Kickstarter.  Then to make it worse, he offered retailers a 20% discount if they still wanted to stock it.

I don't know how many of you know about game store profits, but a 20% discount = losing money for the store owners.

So yeah, he torqued off a lot of people.  People who essentially drummed up interest in the game thinking they were going to be selling it, only to have it yanked out from underneath them.
D&D is not an "everyone gets a ribbon" game.  If you\'re stupid, your PC will die.  If you\'re an asshole, your PC will die (probably from the other PCs).  If you\'re unlucky, your PC may die.  Point?  PC\'s die.  Get over it and roll up a new one.

That I had not heard and I guess it changes perspective. It'd be interesting to see the breakdown of sales from direct online versus brick and mortar. I think Kickstarter might be another kick in the gut to FLGS just like Amazon.
