This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

So who else is excited about the re-release of Car Wars?

Rules for Car Wars at any scale you like go back to 1984, with the Peoria Piledrivers' Upscaling Car Wars article in ADQ. As of DCW, all you need is a turning key in the right scale.

While I played a lot of CW back in the day, since discovering games like Wreckage, Outrider and Axles & Alloys I don't think I'd go back.  Outrider in particular hits a sweet spot between detail and speed for me, and it board-game-izes a lot of the fiddly rules.
D&D is becoming Self-Referential.  It is no longer Setting Referential, where it takes references outside of itself. It is becoming like Ouroboros in its self-gleaning for tropes, no longer attached, let alone needing outside context.

God damn, those are nice. As are the majority of their 1:64 line.

I remember playing Car Wars in the 80s - a mad little game which was satisfying to build the vehicles and watch them get smashed by a bulldozer or a group of bike-riding thugs. It was surprising how much fun it was.

The last re-release (with the streamlined rules and larger scale) just petered out partway through didn't it?  I bought the duel sets and was eagerly awaiting vehicle construction rules-might be wrong but I don't think they ever materialised.

Occasionally play the pocket box set using the PDF of the compendium I bookletized...it's always comedy gold getting a few mates together and playing out a 3 second battle.

I may be mistaken but I think that re-release of the classic Car Wars game is PDF only....

Pretty sure pdfs dont have "shipping dates".

Sure, but when the product itself is described as a PDF, and there are other documents on that new releases page that are listed as PDFs... it begins to look like "Shipped April 4th, 2013" is just another phrase for "Released April...."

Quote from: Silverlion;644881I miss Car Wars, but I do want something fast and visual and cardboard is so last century.

My problem getting people to play even something faster like Road Kill Rally is that "car wars" is one of those genres that console games just do better than a boardgame can.

How is Wreckage? I have almost bought it twice.

It's pretty limited in scope, but I picked it up on clearance for $10 so I don't mind.  The mechanics are kind of similar to Battlecars, if you ever played that.

There are one or two gamebreakingly bad rules that are easily spotted and house ruled out (like so much as brushing up against a barrel means your car is immediately and permanently hulked) but other than that it makes a fun little drive around and bash game.

True enough, hell why don't we have a new Car Wars video game?

Probably because for whatever reason SJG is really awful at licensing their properties.

Interstate '76 was a blatant Car Wars ripoff (at the time SJG was considering legal action, and now, years later, I've heard from one of the ex-dev studio people that Car Wars was absolutely the source of the design and mechanics) and the sadly-departed MMO Auto Assault was everything you could have asked for and a bag of crisps from a Car Wars style video game.

Agreed. Hell, just digitizing the existing game and making online play available would be a huge upgrade in the gameplay experience.  (This is being attempted with Battletech, last I heard; saw TotalBiscuit interview the folks making it as a XBL title.)
