Title: So, D&D Arena of War iPad app...
Post by: Opaopajr on January 21, 2014, 06:49:22 AM
It's carom billiards with bomb hazards. Your PCs are the white cue balls, your enemies are the red balls, you crash into each other until you die.

I like carom billiards, but my jonesing has waned now that I have played Arena of War. They added cost per play, which is paid by timed energy refill. And they also added card grinding. And it's dependent upon online servers. Disappointing.

Anyhoo, who else has played, and any recommendations on a good iPad Carom app? One without the above crap would be best. Thanks!

Arena of War is the only carom game I play right now, so I don't have much to offer, instead I hope we can bear a little bit of Arena of War apologia and some agreement. :D

Since all I was looking for was an easy time-waster on mobile, I like Arena of War enough, and I don't think requires getting into micropayments:

The refill timer allows for a full play/points bar about every 5 hours, which seems like pretty fast turnaround. There are also the small quest potions which can refill 33% of the bar. In my experience, they drop enough so that you could add points every once in a while when you really want to.

There is plenty of card and XP grinding, but the game gets more interesting during the game events which come around every 10-14 days or so. During the events sometimes I come up empty, and others, it's a regular Monty Haul. In between events though, it can be pretty dull.

Finally, the bomb hazards fucking suck. The damage is based on who hit the bomb, so in many fights I'm my own biggest threat because if I hit that bomb the wrong way, one or all of party ends up down 40%-50% of their HP. That kind of damage can really tank the round, making a loss likely.

I've played some, though I've been taking a boredom break.

Agreed on the bomb damage - the game becomes mostly about not hitting bombs, rather than anything else.

I do wish the refill was *slightly* faster, though, especially given how few games a refill gives you.

And the game has zilch to do with D&D.

Why on earth would anyone play this, when Warhammer Quest exists and isn't shit and awful?

I could see how this would be a lot of fun for a physical game - I know there's one based on the concept, can't remember the name though - but yeah, this is a bit crap.

Warhammer Quest didn't do it for me.  Just felt really slow.  I'll probably give it another shot, though.

Once it's ported to Android, I'll give WQ a shot.

Yes they do suck. It's like the Ren & Stimpy game of "Don't Piss on the Electric Fence" realized.

I just wanna churn through multiple rounds of billiards without so many breaks. So yeah, it refills fast, but I'm not all that interested in waiting to get my jones out. Like waiting to play Solitaire or Free Cell; not enough play fast enough, so not really my thing.

WQ isn't free and seems to be a Turn Based Strategy. I love TBS, though. And yeah it is an embarrassing waste of the D&D 4e license.

I'm more into I guess figuring out who thought this was a good idea -- and finding a good free carom app.

Nooooo! They're turning off the servers Aug 31st and canceling app download by July 17th. How am I going to set us up the bomb now? My base are all belong to them...
