This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Duke Nukem Forever

You've got to be fucking kidding me.

Duke Nukem Forever is finished, and ships next week to US stores.

Far too late to cash in on the predecessors' success, but maybe just in time for nostalgia (The Expendables, anyone?).

"In a way, the Lands of Dream are far more brutal than the worlds of most mainstream games. All of the games set there have a bittersweetness that I find much harder to take than the ridiculous adolescent posturing of so-called \'grittily realistic\' games. So maybe one reason I like them as a setting is because they are far more like the real world: colourful, crazy, full of strange creatures and people, eternal and yet changing, deeply beautiful and sometimes profoundly bitter."

Any word on how the boob physics are with this engine?

It will probably do fine.  Not Halo numbers, but it will do fine.

For all the hardcore online gamers who wank that everything released before 2009 is "utterly outdated", there are actually millions of people who just want to play something that looks fun.

So that's the question.  Will it look like fun?  Will it really be funny?  Or just yet another flashy FPS?  I guess we will have to wait for some trailers and TV commercials.

Lawbag

Essentially is like any other FPS but re-skinned to look like Duke Nukem. Most likely done to shut up the fans and moaners about how long this has taken to come to market.

Which is really sad, when you think about it.  There is literally nothing innovative they could have done with this franchise at this point, and yet they are pushing it out anyway.

Let's see...huge god-gun that takes up one quarter of the screen?  Check.  Obligatory vehicle section in 3rd person view?  Check.  Everything done in scintillating shades of brown and ... brown?  Check.

Why am I supposed to care about this dreck again?

Who cares if it's innovative?

If it's a good game, it's a good game..derivative or not. DN3D made a name for itself on attitude, not innovation.

There's certainly the possibility they can get out an very entertaining FPS where you shoot pig faced cops with shrink rays and squash them. I'm pretty excited for it. FPS's have not had a whole lot of character lately. Faceless silent space marines after faceless silent war veterans.

Well, I am sure a good number of people do.  The sad part is that after 12yrs, they should have one kick-ass game on their hands.  I mean, let's face it: the graphics and physics should have been a no brainer for about the last six years, minimum.  Those things have gone from the early 'everyone does their own' stage, as when Duke Nukem first came out, to the current 'accepted best practices' stage where FPS games are now.

The sad part is that they have had at least six years to really innovate in the game play area without that pressure to make up a physics engine and work out all the graphics from scratch.

And as a quick aside:  I am begging everyone to please stop assuming your tastes are universal.  You, as an individual, may not really care about innovative game play.  But assuming that no one else does either is irritating.  If I said that the game has no potato farming mini-game, you would likely be correct in assuming no one else cares about that.  Unless you keep up with the field and understand that current titles have potato-farming mini-games as prominent features.

Part of what makes it a good game, at least in a reviewer's mind, is innovation.  There was nothing terribly interesting about the basic gameplay of Halo when it first came out.  Except the extensive vehicle use.  Oh, and that on-line play thing.  And the deep campaign story.  Without all that, Halo would have been little more than Laser Arena.

A shrink weapon would be interesting, but cosmetic changes rarely revive a franchise by themselves.  Someone could have already modded the Quake engine to have pig-faced cops if that was the key to success.  After this much time, I would not put the long money on the Duke Nukem name carrying the day.

Boob physics are ridiculously hard to either predict or program accurately.  The gainax algorithms have been only partially successful in modelling the behaviour of boobs at high angular momentum.

Clearly, more research is needed before an accurate model can be designed.  :)

I wonder if this will go for a "GTA" type meme or will duke be a better person than that. Personally I think it might be funny to have him beat the shit out of/kill the kind of characters from GTA because even he thinks they're sick fucks.

The nostalgic and the curious will buy the game in Week One, but what happens next will totally depend on gameplay.

I think gameplay is a far bigger factor in success than innovation.   If people start raving about how much fun they are having, then it will be a money maker.  If its just "meh", then its dead.
