Title: Red Dead Redemption
Post by: GameDaddy on June 19, 2010, 10:18:47 AM
I'm totally liking the breadth and scope of this Western FPS.

The main storyline is kind of sucky though. As a lawman, I didn't particularly care for the Mexican General that De Santa works for, and totally wanted to instantly gun down the Generale on sight, the very first time I met him. It was pure instinct. However the game physically railroads you past your encounter with him, and you never get the opportunity even to draw.

I call B.S. on Rockstar Games for this most grevious design flaw.

Honestly, one should be able to find Bill Williams by being in the right place at the right time, not by torching a village of Mexican peasants.

Shame on you Rockstar Games.

I'm enjoying the main story quite a bit and I found the Mexican general and his lackeys very entertaining.  Though I do agree it would have been entertaining if you could just be in the right spot at the right time to take out Bill Williams.  However I'm not complaining at all.  This is easily in the top 3 of my favorite games of all time.

Just completed this. Won't be getting the 100% because, like most games, it stops being fun at this point.

The story is weak and poorly told. I'm rather glad to have finished it all really. 7/10. This game was never ready for release as well, given how filles with bugs and glitches it is. Whateve rhappened to quality control in the video game industry.

Not a bad game by any means, but lacking in cohesion and not very well thought through in many key areas, including the story.

Its a Video Game for pity's sake - not a movie ort TV show.

Most of the XBOX players I meet don't mind knoweing details ahead or even love to - that way they can plan ahead for when they try a game.

In his defense, I know more than a few people who care more about video game spoilers than they do TV or movie spoilers.

Put me in with the care about spoilers crowd when it comes to video games.  I'll also chyme in with the what a stupid thing to say crowd to.

I can see a point if you are talking about sports games perhaps but anything around a story that builds up to something.  Yeah I care about the spoilers.  Why wouldn't you?  Video games are more engaging then a TV or Movie and require far more commitment.  Finding out the ending of a TV show that's 1 hr long, kinda sucks, but finding out the spoiler for a video game you've been invested into for weeks or months fucking sucks.

It's got nothing to do with it being a video game - spoilers apply to anything that's being discussed with a plot. I would expect to see that courtesy from and to everyone with respect to not revealing what happens, no matter how trivial it might seem to someone. I would expect that to include rpg's and story/metaplots as well.

Who wouldn't?

I agree.  I mean, at least within a certain time frame...even then, I tend to still try to toss a spoiler warning out (unless it's already in common discussion on a thread).  It's just common courtesy.

And what game where you playing?  The story was pretty typical for a western theme and enjoyable if you played into the bad guy looking for redemption.  Yes it would be weak if you were trying to thumb your nose at the world and be the psychotic killer, but that's not the stories intent.

As for bugs, other then the occasional graphical clipping I haven't had a game bug yet. No crashes, no glitches, no random weird stuff nothing.

Well without wishing to spoil things the characters come and go too easily and Marston just gets the runaround constantly, content to have his time wasted by idiots. A lot of the missions are very samey and the game really drags in Mexico. Like GTA4 there's just not enough meat on the bones.

I played as a good guy and wondered what on earth the point of the wanted/bounty aspect was. The only time I broke the law was when i accidentally shot a lawman (you can barely tell who's who) outisde of town. Even then I had so many pardon letters it was pointless. You dont' want for money either; paying bounties was no problem. I had more than enough money to be constantly stocked full of medicine and deadeye that nothing was remotely threatening to me. Deadeye is cool, but makes the game too easy really.

Guess it's all in what you take away from it.  I quite enjoy just riding around taking in the sites, hunting game for no other reason then to hunt it.  Marsdon does get the run around to be sure and there are times where I certainly wanted to just shoot someone in the face and be done with it.  But never found it to be a problem.  It just helped to build up my hatred with the officials that were putting me in this spot.  I will agree that the Mexico portion felt a little draggy and extended.   But it was fairly easy to rush through the dull points and even if it dragged the action parts of it were fun.

Cash is meaningless past a certain point and that does kinda bug me because initially they were talking about player driven economy which clearly isn't the case.  Paying bounties wasn't an issue, but I seldom racked up a bounty on me and it's pretty easy to tell who the sherif's are out of town - they are the ones doing the chasing.

But whatever everyone has different takes on things so it's not like I'm saying your wrong.

Rockstar never get how to use money in their games which is a shame since it could really improve the experience giving players an incentive to interact more with the environment.

I enjoyed riding around and doing blue dot missions and all the challenges, but all games are finite experiences. I completed the storyline and got almost 100%. Did some of the Coop stuff (all except Ammunition which is utterly stupid). Unfortunately i don't have HD television and the game struggles in SD, especially in Tall Trees.

I got my money's worth for sure, but i've had my fill. The multiplayer is otherwise fairly rubbish so I sold it on and bought the new transformers game. That will do for now.
