This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Modern Warfare 2

Picked this up cheap second hand as it's the cool game all the cool kids are talking about these days.

Oh dear.

What a horrible, horrible mess. Nothing has been fixed. The DLC is priced absurdly high and the game is dominated by the most repugnant specimens of humanity I've ever had the misfortune to encounter.

I'm so glad I pay to play online, thanks to M$.
"Ghost Whistler" is rated PG-13 (Parents strongly cautioned). Parental death, alien battles and annihilated worlds.

Cranewings

My favorite game. I'm 570% complete in multiplayer.

I thought it was bad until I played Bad Company 2, which took its achievement thing and really went with it.
I'm used to playing FPS games like red orchestra, tf2, day of defeat and such that have standard kit for everyone, where the good players get good scores because they're good, but in games like Modern Warfare 2 and Bad Company 2, they seem to punish new players by giving them crappy weapons and give the older players all the bonuses under the sun along with massive arsenals that require little effort to decimate the opposing team.
It took me 2 months to get to level 2 in BC2--I'd run up to someone, empty a clip into their back with the default submachine gun, and then they'd turn around and kill me with a swing from their boot knife.  How on earth is that supposed to be fun?

Anyways, MW2 isn't the best, but it's far from the worst out there, even if it's totally skip worthy.

Cranewings

In modern warfare 2, the starting weapons in every class but LMG are on par with the best weapons in the game, particularly the intervention, mp5, and famus. Stopping power is the most important perk in normal mode. When you hit level 5, after about an hour of play, you can unlock your harrier strike.

The unlocks aren't the issue in mw2, it is playing it enough to know the
Map and be able to guess what other people are doing.

It's actually way more forgiving than I give it credit for, I just really really hate the whole unlocking and leveling scheme for games like that.  I think counter-strike's method would be about the farthest I'd go, and even then, when your team sucks, why on earth would the game punish you even more?  That's just bad design for anything resembling fun in my opinion.

Ghost Whistler

I would say bfbc2 blows this out the water simply because it doesn't have the totally OTT killstreak element. It also rewards people for playing properly with all sorts of rewards for assists of all kinds.

Stopping Power does nothing, absolutely nothing. I've shot people for several rounds with it and they just stand there and fire once at me and i'm dead.

Deathstreaks are a great idea piss poorly implemented.

Matchmaking is horrible, truly horrible.

Cranewings

Sorry mate, might be your bullet grouping or something. Stopping power is a big deal.

BC2 is a great game. I just don't like it because of the restrictions on who can hear you talk and the limited number of game types. Otherwise, it is probably the best one out.

Although you the kill streaks are unfair, wait until you play against a well organized team that gets both choppers and Pilots them with engineers. There is nothing worse.

Got Modern Warfare some time ago and though I did like the campaign, which I replay from time to time, the multiplayer aspect of the game failed to grab me. It's a lot more noob friendly than Halo is.

What can I say. I'm a Halo fanboy. Waiting for Halo: Reach now.

Ghost Whistler

Halo is utter bollocks.

Much like this; killstreaks are completely over the top and just punish inexperienced players unfairly (who never get them) while the grenade launcher is just plain broken.

Frankly i'm staggered this game even got passed beta testing it's so broken.

You get Cold Blooded (which makes you invisible to air support and sentry guns) as a perk at level 31 I think, which only takes about 5 or 6 hours to get to, so anyone with any interest in the game is going to power through and get it. I've gone from level 1 up 6 times now, and it isn't a problem. Every once in a while I get on my mic and say, "I'm pinned down in this house. I don't have cold blooded, someone needs to shoot the chopper down."

As far as the nube tube, it isn't as good a weapon as you think. At best, it helps you get to an even kill death because one shot can kill people. Unfortunately, it takes longer to aim at someone than firing strait with bullets and it is totally useless against anyone on the high ground.

The way to combat the nube tube is to get on top of something, or not stand still, camping rooms. If you are playing an objective game with a flag, everyone is going to have tubes. That is why it is important to take the area surrounding it with snipers before you lay on the flag. You should have your tube as well.

A lot of people who don't like this or that video game don't like it because they fail to adapt to the rules of that game, expecting it to conform to their preconcieved ideas of realism or fairness, while refusing to learn the strategies associated with it.

With ALL shooters, the person with the best reflexes combined with the best connection time is going to have the most important edge. Even if you take out all the kill streaks (which you can in MW2 by playing the Bare Bones modes) you still have the problem of people with better reflexes who already know the maps, who can guess where you will be based on the location of their own spawn.

If you want something fair, play battleship.

LOL Different takes and stuff, I guess. Personally I find CoD fucking boring to tears.

I've actually quit playing CoD unless I have friends on now... Transformers WFC has taken over as the single most fun FPS I've ever seen.

Warning - leveling is a BIG deal in it. There is a lot of important power ups you don't start with.

You are dead to me.  I can no longer reach you.  Herbert.
I roll to disbelieve.

Yeah. When I say CoD is fucking boring to tears, I'm referring to the Multiplayer part specifically, and indeed, levelling is everything, but thanks to the CoD design team, it doesn't even fucking matter if you win or lose, you just need to play play play and you'll level up eventually. Which is fundamentally different with Halo. Good luck getting your 50 in Halo by sucking bullocks constantly. Unless you're carried in Doubles of course.

Cranewings

Well, like I said before about CoD, leveling isn't that important. Outside of Cold Blooded, which I don't even use all that much, all the most important stuff you start with. You level to get options, not killing power.
