This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

You decide.

Remember when Lara Croft was just a big pair of polygonal tits?

Now in the age of No Russian, that's not enough and now Lara has to be all realistic. This apparently means threats of sexual violence, actual violence, and notions of gender inequality (ie Lara is all feeble like).

Remember when video games were fun and didn't need to be 'edgy'?

I never liked the series, but this was just fucking vile.

D&D is becoming Self-Referential.  It is no longer Setting Referential, where it takes references outside of itself. It is becoming like Ouroboros in its self-gleaning for tropes, no longer attached, let alone needing outside context.

Doom was ridiculous over the top fantasy.

That's the line, I think. Sure it was gorey (even if the graphics couldn't convey it in the same was as Tomb Rapist can, now), but it was clearly fantasy. In fact I'd say Gears of War, with all its visceral glory, is on the same side: it's clear fantasy. This, i'm not so sure.

The extensive use of blood, gore, impaled bodies, satanic imagery, etc. etc.  People had by and large gotten over the PMRC-style panics of the 1980's, but Doom was absolutely trying to push some buttons.  They just didn't succeed very well.

I suppose we perhaps need a better definition of "edgy", here; I cannot remember a time post the PSOne where games aimed at adults weren't trying for some kind of "edgy".

Goddess forbid that video games attempt to advance as an art form.

There are plenty of "mindless fun" games still around, they haven't gone away and probably never will, but they're not the big-budget giants of the medium that they once were. It looks like Tomb Raider 2013 simply isn't going to be for you - and that's fine. It smacks of entitlement culture to think that every product should be designed with just you and your desires in mind.

Russian are largely a safe group to portray as villains in media, yes.  As a group they tend not to protest their negative depiction in media and there's a lot of leftover Cold War resonance amongst adult gamers.

I don't think video games advance by trying to be interactive movies. MP3 fails for many reasons including the fact that two thirds of the game is cut scenes.

I want games to be games, whatever else they may evolve into. If they fail at that then all the innovation in the world isn't worth a damn.

'entitlement culture'? The fuck?

gaming has gone back to using russians quite a lot in recent years. I guess there's less risk of some cave dwelling religious barbarian threatening a fatwah.

Not interested in the game, but not outraged by it, either.  :shrugs:
The problem is not that power corrupts, but that the corruptible are irresistibly drawn to the pursuit of power. Tu ne cede malis, sed contra audentior ito.

Doom

Not sure why they don't show all the climbing and jumping; that's what got me, was how she'd do these incredible acrobatic stunts and not even spent ten seconds looking to see if there would be an easier way.

No.

I have yet to find a video game that I find fun.

I approve of this message.  Video games suck and are unfair until full voice command and response is the norm. If not, then fuck them.

That's definitely a problem. When I used to MUD, I know there were some blind players that played using screenreaders, and you could control some of the mud clients using a voice recognition package, but the fast pace of the AAA games market pretty much makes them not for the disabled. Still, there is stuff out there, if you look beyond retail shelves.
