Title: [Minis] Any historical players around?
Post by: Piestrio on October 14, 2014, 11:31:37 PM
So I just picked up a whole shit ton of Field of Glory books for super cheap at a used shop and it's got my excited about historicals again.

Most of the time when this happens nothing comes of it but this time I stopped by my FLGS and struck up a conversation.

Long story short it looks like I finally have a little historicals group!

We settled on crusades as it's interesting, varied and has the best chance of grabbing attention and maybe bringing a few more people in.

I'll probably be painting either an Egyptian or crusader state army depending on what others are doing.

Anyway, super excited :)

Anyone else playing historicals at the moment?

Painting?

One of my Huron, SD gaming group is heavily into historicals, and I'm happy to play!

Also, if you want historical minis, get your sorry ass to GaryCon in late March.

I've got Flames of War and Bolt Action armies.  I'm working on a War of Spanish Succession army or two and ancient Romans and Celts.  But then part of my store's focus is historical games.

Historical is my preferred kind of miniatures gaming.  I like pretty much everything up to and including Napoleonics, and my interest starts tapering off in the ACW period.  Ancient and Medieval are my favorites, though.

Field of Glory is the system I've used the most.  I have all the army list books they put out.

I've done quite few "bases only" games, trying out different armies without actually investing in the miniatures.  At the moment, I have a couple of 15mm armies that I'm in the process of basing and painting: a late republic Roman army and a Ptolemaic Egyptian (i.e., successor state) army.  Next one I'd like to acquire is a Gaul army (that could double as Galatians, with some minor tweaks).

Since you're doing crusades, you might be interested in the background/prep I did for a "Siege of Nicaea (1097)" battle.  It's not a pure historical battle, but rather a "balanced forces" battle based on the historical details.

Cool thanks :)

We'll probably be doing "balanced" forces stuff for the foreseeable future.

Also I've settled on Ayyubid Egyptians and will be getting a starter army with next months paycheck.

Probably Old Glory or Essex unless my FLGS finds a distributor for anything (currently he can't get anything in :( )

This was an issue I had, so I started a store.  I carry Warlord, Wargames Factory, Plastic Soldier Company, Battle Front, and hope to get in Empress, Old Glory, and others eventually.  The problem is that the gaming distribution system works poorly for miniatures so I went right to the sources.  It's a pain in the ass but at least I can actually get things on their stock lists in which is more than I can say for my distributor.

Any tips I could pass on to my FLGS about where to get minis from?

Call up or email the company in question and say hello.  Most are more than happy to ship to stores.  If you do orders around $800 you can get free shipping from most companies, even the overseas ones.  It's not the easiest way to do business, but it beats simply carrying what everyone else has.

I had picked up my Ptolemaic army second-hand (and already based, but not painted), and they were Magister Militum (http://www.magistermilitum.com/), so I ordered my Romans from Magister Militum, too.

I considered going Baccus 6mm on 25mm bases (which would have looked awesome, I think, especially for pike armies), but I found the shipping costs prohibitive.

I've seen some Old Glory 15 armies that looked really nice.

Just by way of example, my distributor carries Corvus Belli's Infinity but can't be bothered to bring in their wonderful 15mm ancients.

have always had a big collection of AWI 1/72nd scale minis, and have a good collection of 1/72nd Romans and Barbarians as well.. Looking to add some ancient Indian Infantry, Cavalry, and Elephants for my Arrows of Indra game.

I use 1776 which was published in 1976 for my Seven Years Wars, and American War of Independence Stuff... Also have a homebrewed set of Fudge/Fate rules for use with the AWI minis, and that works especially good for battles and campaigns that involve Native Americans.

The Fudge/Fate minis rules I use Ancient Romans game too, and it works pretty well.

Ooooh, pretty.

I'm in the process of making some Napoleonic Skaven, but i dont think that counts as historical. Sadly, my playgroup isnt as interested in historicals as I am. I would love to do an army of Celts or Prussians, but Im stuck playing Warhammer/40k at the moment.

A common problem, I think.

Yeah, even my son (who sometimes plays historical minis with me) prefers the WH40K or Fantasy genres.

I don't think I have the attention span to do any really huge historical forces, like Napoleonics... but I do like skirmish-level historicals.
I'm fond of Dux Britanniarum... and the WWII game TFL came out with a while back, Chain of Command, is quite fun... though, not having any WWII minis has had us playing it with space orks and Imperial Guard proxy figs.
