This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

New to the gaming world so looking for a free (don't mind payed prescription) RGP game?

Or any new text based games like Torn, mafiadeath, mafiacrime etc?

Any recommendations?

Hiya!

This forum is for table-top role-playing games like Dungeons and Dragons that you play around a table/livingroom/etc... with your friends.

We do however have an "Other games" section that caters to computer RPGs and I'm sure a nice admin will move this thread there shortly.

Now that that's over with...

What kind of RPG are you looking for? Single player? Online? Fantasy? Sci-fi? casual? hardcore?

Thanks for the reply, i feel like such a noob now lol... Fantasy, sci fi RPG game always looks like fun, something hardcore could be pretty choice to. Only RPG game i have heard of is WOW so you can guess i have no idea what else is out there.

I'm not the most experienced person but here's a couple I do know about:

On-line-

EVE online: As far as I know this is the hardcore's dream. It's tough, extremely complex and has really deep gameplay. It's very player driven. It rewards people who know how it works and invest lots of time and effort into the game. It can be very off putting and unfriendly to casual/new players. http://www.eveonline.com Free trial.

Star Trek online: Really fun and pretty casual. Not a lot of deep strategy or tactics but really fun ship combat and enough story to hold interest (if not win any awards). You're standard, fight > upgrade > fight bigger things game play. Free to play. https://register.perfectworld.com/sto_splash

Guild Wars: a popular alternative to WoW. Better story, no "questing", no "raids" and more PvP. Free to play http://buy.guildwars2.com/store/gw2/en_US/html/pbPage.buyguildwars2

Star Wars - The Old Republic : People seem to either love or hate this one but nevertheless it's fairly popular. Fairly casual, and it's Star Wars. Free to play - https://account.swtor.com/play-free?intcmp=sor_bwa-mkt-t-us-a-001

Now single players cRPGs I can say more if that's what you want, but it sounds like you want multiplayer so I'll stop for now.

Welcome to the forum!

I've moved this to other games. Feel free to continue posting to the thread - moving it isn't a comment on the thread, just some house-keeping. :)

I play both WoW and GW2 (not nearly as often as I'd like, admittedly) and I generally find WoW to be more noob-friendly. Also I'm really fond of some of the classes. And I don't find the leveling grindy at all; I've experienced very little endgame content, when I hit the cap (level 90 now) I usually run off to level up a new alt. In part because the rushed pace of dungeons and raiding, as well as the widespread lack of tolerance for someone who's learning the ropes, doesn't really appeal to me.

GW2 still kicks my ass every time I log in, but I love it not only for being challenging, but also for feeling like less of a railroad (you don't have to complete every heart and see every sight in a map...) and for rewarding exploration (...but if you do, you sure do get a nice reward), which is my favorite mode of gameplay. Not having a monthly fee also feels great.

I'm still getting the hang of GW2 classes; I have a Ranger (like a WoW Hunter with melee options, neat but nothing to shout about) and an Engineer (a bitch to play at my current low level, but it's so much fun to set up turrets and throw grenades. Can't wait to unlock the flamethrower). My wife has a Necromancer and I can't wait to try it out, either; I'm a sucker for black magician minion master types (big fan of WoW Warlocks) and the Death Shroud mechanic looks really cool.

I've also played a tiny bit of SWTOR and I've found it to be almost WoW with a Star Wars reskin, plus cutscenes. Some of the classes look nifty, but that's really just the Star Wars fan in me speaking.

Consider me another +1 for the Star Wars: Old Republic MMO. Lots of fun - for me.

Ive been playing Lord of the Rings Online now for several years. They keep expanding and improving it, even beginning areas. There is enough variety in character races / classes and "paths" that you don't feel bad going back and creating a new 1st level character and "doing the Shire".

There are still several ongoing MUDs out there. Try MUD connector for a list.

Personally the best I have seen so far is Awake 2064. Which is a complete conversion of the 2nd ed Shadowrun RPG into a MUD. Probably one of the best conversions of a RPG to MUD ever. Really outstanding work coding things in and used to play it extensively. Staying in character is enforced.

I'd love to suggest AQ Worlds or DragonFable or MechQuest from Artix Entertainment. As I was a playtester and member of all three. But the AR games are made of distilled grinding like nothing else out there. Fun stories and can be played free to some degree. But its a grind fest. Especially MechQuest.

There are some FTP MMOs out there too. Champions Online is fun and has some stories to follow. Player to player RPing is hit and miss. Anarchy Online has been around a long time. But is pretty low on RPing potential and the stories are VERY scattershot. Some you just kinda trip over.

There are some flash based single player RPGs out there on Kongregate and other places. Some good. Some total garbage.
