Hey all,
I just played WiiU at a private event @ Comic Con. I've played most of the games shown so far (ZombiU, P100, Pikmin 3, NintendoLand, Arkham City Armored Edition etc.).
Ask me things about it if you're interested.

The Wii what?
Is it in any way less gimmicky than the Wii?
Because, honestly, it seems to be less a game system and more a gimmick...even compared to the Wii.

Did you have fun?
The main "gimmick" is the game pad controller, which makes it play quite a bit like a big DS. There were some gimmicky uses of the controller (NintendoLand), some stuff that was simply complimentary (Arkham City, Pikmin3) and some stuff that was pretty awesome (ZombiU). There were also games that did not use the gamepad much at all and could use a PS3/Xbox type dual analog called the Pro Controller instead(Ninja Gaiden 3).
The gimmicky stuff was in NintendoLand. Things like holding the controller with the touchscreen's short end facing the TV. There was a ninja star printed on the controller and I'd flick it from the controller to the TV. That worked OK, but the controller became decalibrated twice while playing through a single level. The other NintendoLand games where Local multiplayer, with 2-4 players using Wii remotes and one player using the gamepad. The gamepad player would play multiple Animal Crossing cops at once and have his own screen of the full map. The other players would each play a single thief, only able to see their immediate surroundings. Even though it was gimmicky, I still had a fun time playing these games. I think they're perfect for having some friends owithal they had just a little bit of depth and a lot of replay value.
ZombiU had the most innovative use shown there. ZombiU is a survival horror FPS game with some rogue-like elements. The controller can be used to manage your inventory or present context sensitive mingames(like picking locks), but the interesting thing is this: there is no pause. When you bring up your inventory on the gamepad, your character on the TV begins digging through his bag, still vulnerable. Luckily it switches to third person at this point so you have a chance to see the zombies coming. Pretty immersive stuff in that game.
And yes, I had fun:)
In your guesstimation, how much of a travesty of lost opportunity will this WiiU be in comparison to the current Wii? I loved the controller tech advancement on the Wii, and really hoped against experience that something more than crappy gimmicky shovelware would be put out for it. While some great stuff came out, way too much "me too!" mini-game madness (and exercise games! never forget!) glutted the market.
Since I'm about as jaded as an old skool video gamer can get, I'm curious how much squandered potential do you figure the market will crap upon this new design? Screw the fun, talk to me about your projections of despair...
