HeroQuest 25th anniversary edition. . .

I am sure there is enough legalese to cause an issue, but given HQ 25th is a board game with no connection to the HQ RPG and has a long separate legacy, I still call "douchebag" on issuing the C&D.

elfandghost

Have to say when I think of HeroQuest I think of the board game and not the RPG, and yeah 'douche' is applicable. Why would they do that?
Mythras * Call of Cthulhu * OD&Dn

Quote from: soviet;712195It isn't Games Workshop behind the cease and desist, apparently it's Moon Design Publications, who publish the HeroQuest RPG by Robin Laws

Many years before either the boardgame or the Robin Laws RPG, HeroQuest was supposed to be a sort of epic level RuneQuest. It was mentioned as a potential upcoming release in the back of an early edition of RQ. But Chaosium hadn't trademarked it so, deliberately or not, the boardgame got published first and in effect stole the name. It was some time later that Milton Bradley/GW let the TM lapse (again, deliberately or not) and so Issaries were able to re-use it for Robin Laws' new Gloranthan RPG. Maybe MDP are just paranoid about having the name stolen from them again?
Buy Other Worlds, it\'s a multi-genre storygame excuse for an RPG designed to wreck the hobby from within

Melon farmers.

Well, let's see how this plays out.

Oh, and Hasbro apparently said they would be looking into this too.

This thing has been a mess from nearly the get-go.

We dont even know what the rules will be like yet. They wont be HeroQuest since the FAQ makes that one more or less apparent. But will be compatible somehow.

I figure they will come to some agreement with MD and proceed.

Question is. Will this have taken the wind out of their sails or not?

Where did you hear that?

Someone sent off a message to HB legal asking about the validity of the HQ25 and Hasbro replied that they would look into it.

So its anyones guess what could happen next once the current C&D is resolved.

Hopefully GW will re-issue (or re-make) Warhammer Quest which was a truly awesome board game and IMO the best in the genre of dungeon board games.

Skywalker

There's more detail revealed over on BGG. Apparently GZ contacted MD about their TM but didn't follow it up.

MD seems to be focussed on only considering GZ's use of HQ if they have Hasbro's permission, as if it may somehow come back to bite MD

tl;dr GZ is exactly as dodgy as suspected, and the whole situation is a complete mess.

GW's line is that they lost the artwork in their big move in the 90's... Which is plausible enough, I guess.

If they gave it the same sort of rework they did Space Hulk, though - which would be brilliant, and lack of the originals is a fantastic excuse - I wouldn't expect change out of £100. But I'd buy it.

If you've got an iDevice, the recent video game is good!

The whole thing is a dog's ass, no matter which way you turn it.
It always is when people start throwing IP's and lawyers around.

This new HeroQuest has been a blip on my radar since I first heard of the project. I figured Moon Design and GW(and Hasbro - huh!) would have a bone in this fight, I'm only surprised it didn't blew up until now.
It looks like GZ took a fast one by not even adressing the IP-issues before forging ahead with the Kickstarter. It really does not seem like a stellar move..

That said; HeroQuest for me will always be the boardgame, not the wonky Gloranthan RPG. Regardless of who owns the IP, and where.

My thoughts exactly, i'm kinda wondering how long it'll be now before GW send their hellhounds to give the company a kicking aswell? no doubt they'll find an excuse to sue like usual.

Ive never heard anyone from GW say they lost the files and even so, theyd just rework it from the ground up like they did Space Hulk. The epic fail of Dread Fleet though may have killed Warhammer Quests chances. GW though did allow WHQ on the ipad or phone recently. Havent seen it as lack one.

As for HeroQuest, GameZone vs Moon Design.

So far the way its described is...

GZ asked MD permission to use the HQ title in the US.
MD says Ok as long as they showed proof that Hasbro had actually given permission.
GZ declines to show proof.
MD says No. No permission granted.
GZ goes ahead anyhow.
MD gets wind of it and hits them with a C&D and now want some cash too for trying to pull a stunt.
GZ is appealing to KS to remove the lock as obviously MD has no real say in this...

And round and round it goes. And still GZ hasnt shown a single line of rules yet.

Omega

Aaaaaaand.

GameZone pulled the KickStarter campaign and will likely be trying Indigogo or something else.
