This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

[Glorantha] Dragon Pass boardgame - how canon is it ?

I was browsing the Glorantha wiki and found the page on the Dragon Pass boardgame (previous White Bear and Red Moon), and wow, its units are amazingly inspiring and evocative! Take a look:

http://glorantha.wikia.com/wiki/Dragon_Pass_Boardgame

I know Glorantha suffered revisions through the years. How much of that is still canon ?

(I specially like the description of the Windwalkers - "a warband formed by sartarite men and spirits from the Old Wind Temple, that are able to fly like the wind when in combat" )

This might not be the best forum to discuss Gloranthan canon, or any sort of canon really. We're more of a "Holy Crimson Bat guano, look at these Dragon Pass boardgame units! How would you stat them up?"

I really agree with you! I think Glorantha has lost a lot of its magic and energy over the years, seeming much more mundane and predictable as time goes on. Pity.

Of course, my vote is to use the most gonzo descriptions you can come up with!

Phillip

"What's canon?"

Seriously? Like someone here talked with Greg since last week?

Try rpg.net if you want to find people who can even parse that question!
And we are here as on a darkling plain  ~ Swept with confused alarms of struggle and flight, ~ Where ignorant armies clash by night.

Not in RuneQuest.

Arduin (D&D, for practical purposes) versions of some heroes appeared in Wyrm's Footprints magazine.

Yup, seriously. You know wat ? Lately I noticed people around here are somewhat picky, you know ? Like those old ladies who cant stand/get offended by dirty words or something like that. Here in Brazil, macho-country that we are, we have a name for that: Fag. But not in the sexual sense you know? In the fragile, sissy, "afetado" one.

So, if you have a problem with someone asking questions with the word canon in it, let me give you a very brazilian response for that:

Vai dar meia hora de cu, seu afetado de merda.

(go there and translate this if youre curious, you dumbass)

Yup, I think that, in the effort to make the setting more comprehensible and "anthropolically correct", it ended up being more "mundane" with each new edition.

Ah, something lost in translation, methinks!

See, it's just a little hyperbole to say that Greg's 'official' vision of Glorantha changes on a weekly basis. At least that's how it used to be.

Add to that the whole business of Hero Quests reshaping myth and history, and the question of what in the Hero Wars is the True Story gets pretty incoherent. Incoherent questions tend not to produce coherent answers.

That said, I would guess that the closest thing to an official pronouncement would be whatever products have come most recently from Issaries, Inc..

Yeah, OSR faggotry is running this board into the ground.

Would love to hear moar on your topic, and would start my own threads about other games I'm interested in, but I don't want to filter through all the bullshit OD&D/AD&D-oriented responses.*

I love EGG D&D. Just don't need that validation for my opinions.

* In sum, anything Benny would say.
Don\'t forget rule no. 2, noobs. Seriously, just don\'t post there. Those guys are nuts.

Speak your mind here without fear! They\'ll just lock the thread anyway.

Silva's been a cunt on the board for a while now, actually.

I don't know him in RL and I take your word for it he can be a nice guy when he wants to, but that's not what I'm usually seeing here, if ever.

Just getting a bit tired of people around here entering in threads just to crap on the author and subject matter gratuitously without any contribution at all. You and Ben gave honest and respectfully input, but Phillip over there just went full mockery on.

Seeing Phillip subsequent answer now, though, I think it may havent been his actual intention, and maybe I overreacted. If thats the case, my apologies.

No problem. I know we are a rough bunch with each pretty strong opinions, but we can get along, even if we disagree regularly. Cheers, mate.

Doom

Man, that brings back memories...it was a fun, brutal game with some pretty amazing stuff going on, especially a magic combat system that had armies clashing even as the physical armies battled it out on the board.

A nice education blog.
