Title: Games in the Age of Sail
Post by: MoonHunter on June 25, 2009, 01:45:24 PM
I am looking for a war game that is set in the Age of Sail, that does tall ships.

1) For Beginner to Intermediate gamer

2) Gives a good feel for The Ships and all the parts.

3) Cheap or free would be nice.

What would you all recommend?

Would you like to playtest one?

Dan of August Games created a fun game called War of Sail that I playtested at PolyCon a few years ago.   He has done some redesign and he may be looking for playtesters.  Tell him Spinachcat sent you!

How bad can it be?  Sure.  I will be hard pressed to get the rest of my troupe to try it, but I knew that going in.

Besides, I have done a lot of playtesting for various RPGs, so it should be easy enough to do for a war game.

Anyone else have some suggestions out there?

Well, if a miniatures game may fit the bill, I always heartily recommend Heart of Oak (http://rpg.drivethrustuff.com/index.php?cPath=102) by Fantasy Games Unlimited. It isn't free, but $2.80 for the PDF is pretty darn close.

It isn't perfect.  It is a product of its time (1980s) and needs some better organization.  But it is one of the best games for the feel of naval combat of the era.  In particular, it is a "sailing" game, with a fair amount of effort devoted to simulating the effect of wind on the ships' movement.

Avalon Hill's Wooden Ships & Iron Men worked well for me for this...

If you want an RPG, I would go with Broadsides published by Twin Crowns Enterprises... This is d20/3.x, however, very good!

Here's a link for the demo of FJGaming's Ship of the Line. I haven't played it personally, but it looks to be close to what you're looking for.

Here's the link to the full game on RPGNow:

You both beat me to it, but I'll have to cast another vote for Wooden Ships & Iron Men. It's a classic.

There's that old OOP warhammer fantasy naval battle game ^^

And what was it...that sail game where the ships came in card decks, seemed like a cool idea and was real popular last I saw it a couple years ago...can't remember the name?

But really, take the rules of Battlefleet Gothic, a game I love greatly, and convert it into sail ship rules.  The rules for it are brilliant for naval battles with a couple tweaks for wind.

Man o'War - great game, but unbelievably expensive to pick up now.

I have read through the rules. It seems playable enough. I have yet to play it. (Or any Age of Sail Game because of the lack of interest by my local gamers). To be honest, I bought a couple of ships just to use them as miniatures for other games (and they were on clearance at the FLGS).
