This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Fun with ”dead” CCGs

I'll second ME:TW as a visual treat for Middle Earth lovers, and a great game to boot.

I'll also like to nominate Dune CCG, which again had some of the most beautiful artwork ever for a CCG. Never got the chance to play mind you...

Having played hours and hours of Magic anf Jyhad I went one further and just turned a board game I had been working on into a house ruled ccg.

The players had card design rules and would turn up with their own unique cards. Some were over powered but most were pretty good. My Kabal card game ran once or twice a week for 4 hours for 2 years... which for us to maintain interest is pretty good. I even have an Amber ccg we played 3 or 4 tiems but which I never finalised although i looked at it again at the start of this year and am pretty sure it just needs a week's work and some playtesting.

Whatever you say about the effect MtG had on the RPG industry it is a fucking excellent game from a design perspective.

I never did the CCG thing (played Magic one time back in...92ish?  93ish?  Can't really recall; didn't care for it that much), although for the longest time I did have a card from the Wing Commander CCG that came with WC4.

I agree completely. I had tons of fun with M:tG and it is by far the best balanced ccg I have tried, hands down.

It's kinda funny - when I started out playing Magic, ccgs was  something roleplayers played. The first couple of years on conventions also, people played both, and everything seemed honky dory. Then the paradigm shifted, and it became one or the other, not both, especially concerning Magic. I think I have just one friend who still plays both M:tG (online) and roleplaying games.

We always played both although in its heyday our weekly RPG games became tri-weekly magic nights til the partners said ENOUGH!
You ever play virtual MtG. No cards you play from memory no cards in your hand and you can play 1 card a round and a card can only be played once by anyone.

We were able to play it Until just after ice age... pretty fucking geeking but good for long car journeys

I got into Wod From Jyhad and when i ran Vampirei just used cards for allt eh NPCs. halcyon days

I've recently gotten into MtG recently, and have been picking up some of the packs... this is at least partially because of the xbox game, which I've really enjoyed.

I used to play OnTheEdge, and Netrunner, and I've got a piles of both... I've got some unopened netrunner cards I should probably try ebay on.

I think On the Edge and the old Mythos were my favorite games in general, but you can't really find any players anymore.

Yeah, that is the big problem. It's a shame that the whole CCG-thing didn't come out a few years later than it did. If it had, I'm sure we would have online versions of a lot of these old games, making it easier to find people to play them with today.

But nice to hear, that I'm not the only On The Edge fan around here.

And... now I'm suddenly tempted to work up some kind of On The Edge / Dominion smashup.  Collectible games are generally not big, but Dominion's brand of 'draft a deck during play' seems to be doing quite well.

Ghost Whistler

I think i'd pay money for a playset of the Dark Millenium incarnation of the 40k ccg. The original was very good I thought, though no one i knew played it and sabretooth gams died.

Maybe FFG will do a living tcg iteration using their warhammer invasion mechanics.
"Ghost Whistler" is rated PG-13 (Parents strongly cautioned). Parental death, alien battles and annihilated worlds.

Having now checked out Dominion, I say that, that sounds like a really cool idea - if you ever decide to it, please let us know.
I think I will try and get a hold of Dominion asap - sounds like a cool little game.

If you enjoy Dominion, see if you can get a chance to play Thunderstone.  It's a Dungeon Fantasy themed game similar to Dominion in which you build a deck by buying cards... but instead of going into the 'village' and buying a card, you can instead go into the 'dungeon' and fight a monster with your hand of heroes, spells, and items.  My wife and I are really digging it.

I understand someone (FFG?) is doing a Blood-bowl themed game in this new style - basically buying players and strategies to build your neck and then trying to win the game.  All I've heard is that it's planned, there's no details out there yet.

I used to demo the Rage CCG when it was published by White Wolf as a member of the Silver Pack.  I loved that card game and still have most of them.

The Middle Earth CCG ICE published was really good.  It emulated the world and the books very well.

I was never fond of Jyhad.

I used to LOVE the Battletech CCG for a while, and the Shadowrun CCG was a fun little time to play.

My former Rage friends are talking about having a retro gaming night, and I look forward to it.
